While a young boy he was adopted by a whaling skipper from whom he received the name of Rice. He spent most of his life at sea and was for years in charge of the government tug boat. His wife who died some years ago was a sister to John E. Bush. Seven children survive the deceased who had numerous friends among the older generation.
