As I previously told you, Roxy Cherry was my father-in-law's grandmother. (Thus, my husband is a great grandson of Roxy) We chatted for a long time and this is all I learned: Roxy had 18 children - my records said 17, he says 18 "one died at birth" Roxy's son John Herbert Pilmer was called Bert. Roxy's son Lisle worked for Standard Oil - putting in signs - had been in the construction business. My father-in-law still has an aunt that is living - she is 97. Although she is not on the Cherry side of the family she knew them. I will call her this weekend. One of my sisters-in-law visited her last week and said that her mind is very sharp. She (the aunt) lives in Alameda, CA. * From: nancy1953@@mchsi.com To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com CC: dale.pilmer@@vba.va.gov Sent: 2/11/2010 7:27:50 A.M. Pacific Standard Time Subj: RE: Charlotte Nesselrod Cherry Did you compile all of that information about the Cherry family? It is very extensive. I always knew about the Pilmers in Warren County but had no idea of my GG Grandmother Roxies family except she and Robert married in Ohio. I assumed the Cherry branch was left behind. I was pleasantly surprised to have information about Roxies family for two generations back. Charlottes obit was awesome and coupled with the family information was fascinating. My what a hard life she must have had with all those children and widowed at an early age. The loss of her husband and three sons to the Civil War had to be hard as well. I cant imagine how she survived. The Pilmers were early settlers in Warren County Iowa having moved here after a brief stay in Columbiana County Ohio. They originally migrated from Berwickshire Scotland. They became successful farmers and cattle breeders in WC. I think they might have also had some sort of lumber concern. My grandfather was one of eighteen children and they all worked hard on the farm. Good thing Roxie had more girls first so they could help. She had nine sons and they had their own baseball team. She is buried in Scotch Ridge Cemetery just outside the church. My GG and GGG grandparents on the Pilmer side are also resting there. Below is a picture of the church. It is a very pretty country church with an active congregation and the cemetery is well kept. It seems many of the Cherry family are buried in the Linn Grove cemetery in the country near Prole which is just south of here. My son said he knows where it is and when the weather gets better and the snow melts (we have many inches here still) we will go there. Hopefully, I can find some of the gravesites of my ancestors. If you have any more information about the history of the Cherry family you are willing to share I would certainly appreciate it.
