I really needed more time, and I will eventually go back some day. For right now though, I thought that I'd pass along the information that I found. First the births. Leroy Laughbaum Born: November 17, 1879 Place: Shelby, Ohio Father: Levi Daniel Laughbaum Mother: Sarah Hollenbaugh Residence of Parents: Plymouth Record: Volume 3 Page242 Carl E. Laughbaum Born: June 30, 1904 Father: Leroy Laughbaum Mother: Duey Wise Residence of Parents: Jackson Township Record: Volume 3 Page 237 Now a death. Sarah Laughbaum Died: January 27, 1906 Age: 65 Years 10 Months 17 Days Place of Death: Jackson Township Born: Richland County, Ohio Occupation: Farmer Cause of Death: Pneumonia Record: Book 2 Page 253 Now a Richland County, Ohio probate court record. Levi D. Laughbaum Executor: Isaac Hollenbaugh Index: Volume 3 Page 248 Number & Box: 4665 (This is how the material is actually filed.) Executor's Docket: Volume 4 Page 469 Minute Docket: Volume 12 Page 130 Inventory Record: Volume 22 Page 417 Record of Bonds: Volume 9 Page 527 Valerie, I pulled this file and looked at the records for Levi Laughbaum. I doubt if they have been disturbed since the day that they were originally filed away. It states that Levi did not have a will. Sarah relenquished all administrative responsibility for handling the estate to her brother, Isaac Hollenbaugh, in December 1898. Levi and Daniel are listed as having a son, Leroy, 19 years of age, who was an only child. I don't have a copy of the final disbursements, but if I remember right, Sarah was paid $200 as a widow's benefit and about $887 as an estate settlement. Elsewhere it states that the personal property was worth about $1000 and there is a "Total appraisment of securities" for $1411. So, the couple was not impoverished like Sarah's sister Mary Ann was when her husband Hezekiah May died. It looks Hezekiah didn't have a will either, and when I looked at his probate court records all I found was records of bills. How Mary Ann fared I don't really know, but I have another record of her trying to sell off property after Hezekiah's death. May Ann and Hezekiah had only been married about three years when he died, and it looks like he had a lot of debts. Even Hezekiah's family members are listed as creditors. I didn't copy all of Levi's probate records, but I did copy some. If you are interested in a copy of what I have, just let me know and send me your snail-mail address. Hope that this is some help. As you can see from the birth listings, Levi's son, Leroy, had a son named Carl E. Who the rest of the Laughbaums are I can't say as of yet, but as I remember you are related to Horatio. Still working on trying to reassemble Sarah's family. It's slow work. The records from 1840 Ohio are not plentiful, and I was told yesterday that adoption records in Ohio are sealed indefinitely. Seems kind of silly when the people involved have been dead for about a hundred years. I'll keep looking though until I exhaust my resources. Let me know if you find anything more. Thanks for your help. Bruce * Mansfield Semi-Weekly News Mansfield, Richland Co., Ohio Friday, December 9, 1898 Vol. 14, No. 101 Laughbaum, Levi -- Jackson Twp. Most of it is on Levi Laughbaum, but I have some additional materialon Catherine Laughbaum. If you send me your snail mail address I'll copy it and send it to you. For now, I'll transcribe a bit. * * * * * "Shelby News" Shelby, Richland Co., Ohio Friday, December 9, 1898 Levi D. Laughbaum, for many years, mail carrier between the junction and post office, died at his country home 3 miles south east of Shelby, Tuesday morning of consumption. Funeral services were held at home Thursday morning at 10 o'clock conducted by Rev. Wilson of the M. E. Church, after which the remains were laid to rest in Oakland cemetery. * * * * * * * * * * "Shelby Daily Globe" Shelby, Richland Co., Ohio Tuesday January 30, 1906 Funeral of Mrs. Levi Laughbaum The funeral of Mrs Levi Laughbaum was held at the family residence south of Shelby Monday Jan. 29th, 1906 at 10 a.m. Rev. A. E. Winter, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Shelby, officiating. The remains were interred in the family lot in Oakland cemetery beside her husband. Her pastor. Rev. Winter read the following sketch of the life of the deceased. "Sarah Hollenbaugh, was born March 10, 1840 and departed this life Jan 27th, 1906. Aged 65 years, 10 months and 17 days. She lived through the entire period of her early life within the bounds of Richland county, Ohio She was united in marriage to Levi Laughbaum of Richland county, Ohio in 1868. One child was born to this union. By hard toil and economic management they succeeded in building up form themselves a beautiful home and a competence sufficient to keep them comfortable all their days. For many years she has been a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church of Shelby, Ohio. Her husband was called to his eternal home in the winter of 1898. Besides her son, Leroy Laughbaum residing on the old homestead, Mrs. Laughbaum is survived by a sister, Mrs. Amos Crall of Shelby, Ohio, and five brothers as follows: Jacob Hollenbaugh, of Fostoria, O., Samuel Hollenbaugh, of Williams county, O., David Hollenbaugh of Defiance, O. John Hollenbaugh living in the state of Indiana, and Isaac Hollenbaugh of Shiloh, O. Our deceased sisted possessed a retiring and unostentacious disposition rather shrinking from publicity, but was a kind good neighbor loved by all who knew her. * * * * * * * * The other piece is too long for me to copy since I'm such a lousy typist. It deals with the Ollie M. (Morrow) Swartz family and is from a book on families of Crawford County, Ohio. Unfortunately I forgot to copy the publishing information. If I get back to the library in Shelby, Ohio I'll get the information. Basically though it deals with Solomon Laughbaum's daughter, Catherine who married William Morrow. If you're not interested that's okay. Just let me know if you want copies of anything. Please let me know if you ever come across additional information on the associated Hollenbaughs. I'm still plugging away at trying to figure out who they all are and what happend to everyone. Hope that things are going well Bruce Arnold
