Note: He was a Mason * Served with Company A, 2nd Batallion of Hilliard's Legion (later became 59th Alabama Infantry regiment) of the C.S.A. on 5 April 1862, as did his brothers, Charles and Levi. He is listed as the drummer. 25 Nov 1863, the above part of Hilliard's Legion became part of the 59th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company B. Furloughed on 23 May 1864, after receiving treatment for a gunshot wound to his thigh. E. J. Freeman served in Co. F 59th AL. He applied for a pension in Heard Co., GA in Jan 1897 - Jan 1906. He then completed an Application for Pension for Total Blindness Under Act August 19, 1912 in October 1912. He was awared $100.00 for the year 1913. Mrs. E.A. Freeman (widow of E. J. Freeman of Co. F 59th AL) applied for a pension in Heard Co. GA * Mason emblem on headstone. * The 1875 tax sale advertisement listed Eli Jackson Freeman's property as "se nw and sw nw s 4 t twenty r thirteen rr 45 cts" (Southeast quarter of the northwest quarter and southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 4, Township twenty, Range 13 and his tax was 45 cents.) This is eighty acres lying just off, and south of, the Omaha-Franklin road and a half mile east of the Omaha-Graham road. This adjoined land on the south owned by Andrew Jackson Green and on the north by land owned by Chesly Davis. Later, they lived in Heard County in the Walnut Hill area. They were living there for the 1910 census. Eli was treasurer of Heard County in 1912-1913. In his later years, Eli Jackson Freeman was blind from cateracts. He had an eye operation but the improvement was temporary. Clifford Freeman remembered his spending the night with Rufus Wiley Freeman's family when on the way to Atlanta for the operation. Enos Noles remembered seeing Neelie lead him along the road east of Frolona when they were returning from a store where he had acquired a bag of flour which he was carrying. Also, the wounded leg reportedly bothered him in his later years. His grandson, Roy, talked to his family about his rememberances of the wounded leg and the blindness. - Thomas Freeman * Last Name: Freeman First Name: Ely MI: Jackson Date of Birth: Birth Information: Date of Death: Death Information: Discharge Date: Discharge Information: Branch: Regimental Unit: 2nd Battalion, Hilliard's Legion Company Unit: A Co. Freeman in Heard County, GA Date: 2/24/04 9:20:59 PM Pacific Standard Time From: tealtree@@comcast.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com Valerie, Don't know if E.J. Freeman might be in your Freeman lines or not in Heard County, GA....but I am transcribing a civil war pension for William Calvin SHIREY, and one of his witnesses was E.J. Freeman of Heard County, GA (in 1897) who says that he served in the same civil war Co. and Reg't, co. F 59th Alabama Inf. Reg't. (I think that this civil war regiment was out of Randolph County, Alabama). E. J. Freeman was also a pensioner in Heard County, GA. Both he and his wife applied for civil war pensions. I don't have their pension files but saw their names in the book " Index to Civil War Confederate Pensions in Georgia". I have this book so if you want any look ups from the book, let me know.
