Chesley Davis, born Bet. 1804 - 1807 in Georgia; died Bef. December 1888 in Randolph County, Alabama. He married 35. Elana or Menelus "Liney" Green. Notes for Chesley Davis: There is some indication that Chesley Davis lived in Monroe County, Georgia in 1837, was possibly the Chesley Davis living in Henry County, Georgia in 1840 (there is a Chesley Davis, 20-30, with a female 15-20, and 3 males under 5), and was in Heard County, Georgia in 1850. He came under the watch care of Big Springs Baptist Church in 1856. There is a record of his contributing to the church in 1862. He was not on the membership list in 1885. He was on the Randolph County, Alabama census in 1860 and 1870. He likely was dead before December 1888. Auby Davis said his father took him to Big Springs when he was quite young and pointed out an area among the unmarked graves in which Chesley was buried. The 1875 tax sale listing of property for sale in Beat 5, Randolph County, Alabama listed his property as "ne ne s 5 t twenty range thirteen w half nw s 4 t twenty r thirteen rr 45 cts" (the northeast quarter of the northeast quarter of section 5 township twenty range thirteen and the west half of the northwest quarter of section 4 township twenty range thirteen and his tax was forty five cents.) This is 120 acres through which runs the road from Omaha, Alabama to Frolona, Georgia, less than a mile from the intersection of that road with the road from Roanoke to Graham. - Thomas Freeman * Subj: [GACARROL] re: Arrington and Davis Date: 2/1/2002 11:34:40 AM Pacific Standard Time From: marge@@atlantic.net (Susan) To: GACARROL-L@@rootsweb.com In answer to VCJFreeman: This is the same Arrington's and Davis's! Eliza A. Davis was the sister of my gr.gr.grandfather, Green Jackson Davis. They were the children of Chesley and Elana Green Davis. John H. Davis was the son of Green Davis and Talitha Hines. Their son, Robert J. Davis, was my grandfather. Grover K. Davis, their son, was my father. Dovie Lee Arrington, was the daughter of William Arrington and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Davis. William is the son of John J. Arrington and Mary Catherine Prestride, my gr.gr.grandparents! My grandparents, (Robert J. (Bob) Davis, and Dovie Arrington Davis) and their family lived in Bowdon, 1917-1928. Children: Vesta, Velma, Grover, Everett, and Paul. They were on the 1920 Bowdon Census, living on Main Street. They moved to Atlanta in 1928. Everett died about 1937, and was buried in Bowdon. SC. There were several men at the time of the Civil War named Cheslely Davis. I descend from one of them (the one who married Mary Tate) through his daughter Rhoda who married John Abernathy in 1775 in Newberry Co. SC. I think several of his grandchildren, first cousins to each other, may have been named for him. Chesley was an unusual fellow: acccording to researchers like myself who occasionally get data a little mixed up, he had two sets of parents (see Ancestral File). I think I also ordered a CSA marker for Green Davis-I think that was his name, I ordered 10 markers for Big Springs, I am sure there were more Vets upthere, but I have had such a time getting those markers placed in the Cemeteries, I have about given up.
