Note: Calhoun County was created in 1832 from former Creek Indian territory. Initially, the county was named Benton for Colonel Thomas Hart Benton. In 1858, the name was changed to Calhoun in honor of John C. Calhoun of South Carolina. These folks were from Randolph County, AL. This article found in the AL Archives loose papers of CW Units, and was a newspaper clipping from a Hico, TX [Hamilton Co.] area newspaper, apparently in late 1800's or early 1900's, when members of this unit were still living. ROSTER OF CO. F, 22ND ALABAMA INFANTRY, C.S.A. Some weeks ago this paper contained an item relative to the Roster of Co. F., 22nd Alabama Infantry, C.S.A. As stated at that time, that Alabama Department of Archives and History was not able to give a list of the members of this interesting organization. However, during the past few weeks two members of the Company, Messrs. W.S. Pruett and N.B. Ross, who reside near Hico, have succeeded in recalling the following names of the men composing the company. The company was organized at Arbecoochie, Ala., (then in Randolph County, but since changed to Cleburne County); were mustered into the Confederate service on October 1, 1861, at Notasulga; the first battle participated in was the battle of Shiloh on April 6-7, 1862; then spent the summer of that year in the Shiloh vicinity, and from there went to Mobile, thence to Atlanta, later to Chatanooga; after having marched through Kentucky, the 22nd Regiment returned to Alabama, where they were mustered out of service at the close of the war. The roster: (per Suzy Hickerson, served under command of Col. George H. Nixon) Commissioned officers: P. W. Shepard, captaian; Jerimiah Smith, First Lieutenant; W. S. Pruett, Third Lietenant. Non-commissioned officers: George Smith, first sergeant; Billie Otwell, third sergeant, N. B. Ross, fourth sergeant. CSA ? I have one (ca 1988) with my husband and the very kind local man, Horace A. Kirby who helped us locate this cemetery which is about 50 yards off a road and in thick brush. This is the cemetery Jessie Hearle told us about and gave us directions to the area, then we needed a local "guide" for the actual site. This William Prestridge is the one born June 12, 1823, Fayette Co., GA; died 07 March 1866 Rock Springs, Randolph Co, AL; married 1845 to Louiza Smith b. 05 Nov 1821 GA, d. 14 Dec 1901, buried Four Mile Methodist Church Cemetery just south of Jacksonville, Calhoun Co., AL near the home of her daughter Nancy Ann Prestridge Dothard. By the way, Louiza signed her name using a "z" instead of an "s" on her application for a CSA Widows Pension. I notice "our" William Prestridge does not show a birth or death date. I have all the information from my research of 1987 or 1988 when we met and you directed Bill and I to the Slate Hill Cemetery. I do not know how to add dates etc. to the Find a Grave site but thought perhaps you would and since you pointed us in the right direction for our Prestridge research, would you go the extra step and add what information should be inserted for CSA veteran William Prestridge? I think he needs an obit of some kind those soldiers gave so much to gain so little! If you dont feel you can add this information perhaps you could forward this message on to Burnis Argo? Thank You!! Frances Prestridge (for William A. Prestridge Bill b. 8-25-1925 and still hale and hearty) _______________________________________________________________________________________________ John Prestridge born ca. 1791, died in Fayette Co., GA after the 1830 census and before March 1831. There does not seem to be any record surviving showing the name of his wife who quite possibly also died as no wife is mentioned in various pages of the apprenticeship records of the Fayette Co., GA Court of Ordinary Book A 1830-1850 when "the orphans of John Prestridge recently deceased" are apprenticed until age 21 on March 7, 1831 to learn the "mysteries of farming". James, age 14, was bound to A. McEachens, William, b. 12 June 1823, bound to Warren H. Cooper, and Jesse C.* b. 28 March 1827 was bound to Martin Post. William was apprenticed a second time, still in Fayette Co., GA to Edward P. Nixon on Nov. 7, 1837 where his date of birth is shown. E. P. Nixon dies before Feb. 1, 1849 in Randolph Co., AL which gives us the answer as to why William was in AL. I have found nothing else about brother James. In the papers of the Cherokee Land Grant applications of Georgia, an application was made "for the orphans of John Prestridge of Fayette Co., GA". The land they won in the Lottery was never taken up, again not unusual. Many times the land "won" was never viewed by the "winner" but the option on it was sold or was returned to the State having never been improved upon. In this case, it was sold in 1854 by the State of Georgia as unclaimed. This acreage is in the hilly area of Georgia just southeast of Blairsville, Union County, GA. William Prestridge born June 12, 1823 in Fayette Co., GA, died 7 March 1866 in Rock Springs, Randolph Co., AL., buried in Slate Hill Cemetery near Rock Springs [area became Cleburne Co. on 6 December 1866]; married about 1845 Louiza (Hammond?) Smith, born 5 Nov. 1821 in GA., died 14 Dec. 1901, buried in Four Mile Methodist Church Cemetery just south of Jacksonville in Calhoun Co., AL near the home of her daughter Nancy Ann [Prestridge] Dothard. It is thought Louiza was the daughter of Mark and Margaret (Gentry) Hammond and that she had been married previously as she had a daughter named Louisa Smith who was later listed as an heir of William's. William and Louiza had the following children: John Milton b. 18 May 1847; Mark Zachariah b. 15 Aug. 1848, m. Martha Caroline Orphelia Hodnett; Sarah M. b. 13 Mar. 1850, m. Andrew Johnson Haley; Wm. Crofford b. 20 Nov. 1852 m. Mary E. Johns; Nancy Ann b. 23 Sept. 1854, m. Hugh Dothard; James E. b. 1856, m. Georgia Ann Walker; Larkin M. b. 1858, m. Sarah Jane Johns; Daniel Jefferson b. 1862, m. Anniliza ______; all born in present day Cleburne Co., AL. The Prestridge homestead was very near the county line between Randolph and Cleburne counties and that line has since changed making the site of the homestead approximately 4 miles due west of Union Hill, AL. Confederate Army Pay Vouchers show that Private William Prestridge of Co. F, 22nd AL. Infantry, CSA received twenty five cents per day through July, August and September 1863 from a paymaster "near Chattanooga, TN". On Jan. 20 1864 "near Dalton, GA" Private William Prestridge received $178.13 from the Quartermaster. There was a "bounty" of $134.13 included in this last payment. On April 15, 1864 Pvt. William Prestridge was issued "one pair of pants, one jacket, one pair of socks" by the same Quartermaster. At this time Pvt. Prestridge was serving as a Teamster for the 10th Tennessee Regt. near Dalton, GA according to Confederate Widows Pension Paper of Mrs. Louiza Prestridge. William died at their home in Randolph Co., AL soon after returning from the War. Family tradition says that William "died of his wounds soon after returning home". I surmise that William Prestridge was in the Battles of Chattanooga and Chickamauga, probably wounded and hospitalized; issued clothing to get home and was released being no longer a viable soldier of the CSA Army. The Prestridge Homestead of 160 acres, plus 40 acres purchased after the death of William, was sold 12 December 1888 by William's widow and children - Louisa Smith Patterson, John M. Prestridge, Mark Z. Prestridge, Sarah M. Haley, Wm. C. Prestridge, Nancy Ann Dothard, James E. Prestridge, Daniel J. Prestridge - to son, and also an heir, Larken M. Prestridge, as recorded in the Cleburne County Courthouse, each heir receiving $36.11 as the 200 acres was valued at $325.00. John Milton Prestridge born 18 May 1847 in Randolph Co., AL. His first wife was Matilda Jane Miller,- daughter of Jefferson and Nancy (Taylor) Miller - b. 4 June 1849 in AL, d. 1 Sept. 1894, buried in Everette Springs Cemetery, Everette Springs, (just north of Rome) Floyd County, GA. They had apparently moved to Georgia after participating in the sale of the Homestead in Alabama. J.M. and Matilda had six children, Cular Dialtha b. 22 Aug. 1872 m. J. Adams; Elijah Alexander b. 28 Aug. 1891 m. Alta Woodward. All born in Alabama. On 5 December 1897 J. M. married Elizabeth Louis Reese b. 21 April 1864 Sonoraville, GA "after the crops were in" as told to Gladys Prestridge, a dau-in-law. J. M.'s second family consisted of Olive Lee b. 27 Sept. 1898 m. W.D. Graves; Louis Reece b. 6 Mar. 1901 m. ____ ; John Alva b. 9 May 1903 m. Gladys McDowell; Cornelia Alice b. 21 Feb. 1906 m. Ed Smallwood; all born in Everette Springs, GA. The children of the first family and the second family did not get along very well so in 1907 J.M. moved the second family to Decatur, TX where they bought a farm. J.M. died there 21 Jan. 1936, Elizabeth died there 14 Aug. 1947.
