  Romulus Mitchell Saunders
 http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romulus_Mitchell_Saunders
Romulus Mitchell Saunders (3 March 1791 21 April 1867) was an American politician from North Carolina.
Saunders was born near Milton, Caswell County, North Carolina. He was the son of William Saunders and Hannah Mitchell Saunders, attended Hyco and Caswell Academies and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a lawyer, legislator, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Commons, U.S. Representative from 1821 to 1827, North Carolina Attorney General, North Carolina Superior Court Judge, and the unsuccessful Democratic Party nominee for Governor in 1840 (losing soundly to John Motley Morehead). President James K. Polk appointed him minister to Spain (18461849).
Saunders served on the University of North Carolina Board of Trustees for forty-five years. Saunders first married Rebecca Peine Carter on 27 December 1812. They had five children-James, Thomas Franklin, Camillus, Anne Pine and Rebecca. After her death, he married Anne Heyes Johnson (daughter of Supreme Court Justice William Johnson (judge)) on 26 May 1823. They had six childrenLouis McLane, William Johnson, Sarah E.,Margaret Madeline, Jane Claudia, and Julia A. His daughter, Jane Claudia Saunders Johnson, was the wife of Confederate General Bradley Tyler Johnson.) He died 21 April 1867, and is buried in the Old City Cemetery, Raleigh, North Carolina.
According to biographer H. G. Jones, "He was a man of considerable ability and talent, but he was rough-hewn in his appearance and speech, often intemperate in his statements, and intensely partisan in his associations. He was popular among the rank-and-file Democrats, but his inveterate pursuit of public office eventually diminished his influence among party leaders."
Saunders Hall on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill is often thought to have been named after Romulus M. Saunders. Instead, it is named for William L. Saunders.

Lucinda and Sanders split up towards the end of their marriage (separated); she went to Tallapoosa, Haralson, GA with her son Samuel (I think it was) and Sanders went on to Winston Co., AL.
  from my notes:
Sanders was cutting down a tree which landed on him, killing him from injuries sustained death in Moreland, Winston, AL.
Served as Sheriff of Clayton Co., GA 2 terms, was run out of town (as reported to me).
Wife did not go with him to Winston, Moreland, AL but stayed with another child, son Samuel in Haralson Co., GA.
Romulus and Lucinda are said to have become estranged about that time.
Would like to know more about the "run out of town" part
Sanders might have decided to go to Moreland because he had Scoggins relatives already there and it was a remote area (still is today); it would have been hard to find him there.

Hi Valerie - I have a double tie to the Cates family.
My ancestor Marthenia Hassie Adamson married Alexander Cates in 1876, they are both buried at Mt. Zion Bapt. Church Cem., Morrow, GA.
My ancestor Susannah M. Cook married Green B. (Greenberry?) Cates in 1874, they are buried in the Forest Park Cem., Main St., FP, GA. Forest Park is just north of Mt. Zion Cem.
I do not know the parents of Alexander Cates; he was b. 7-5-1855, d. 2-6-1929. I have the book "All Known Cemeteries in Clayton Co, GA" and I see many Cates buried at Mt. Zion, as you said.
The parents of Greenberry Cates is Romulus Sanders Cates & Lucinda E. Reeves.
Which Cates family are you researching? I have quite a lot of data in my Family Tree Maker. I lived in the area most of my life, have only been in FL for 5 years, so I am familiar with the cemeteries, etc.
The books First Families of Henry County, Georgia; and History of Clayton County, Georgia 1821-1983 show many Cates family members. I purchased these books from the Henry and Clayton Co. Genealogical Society, McDonough, GA, of which I am a member. I can give you their address & tel. number if you want it.
The Cates families in Clayton & Henry counties were numerous, this was a large family network. They are buried in several cemeteries.
  Yours in genealogy,

Romulus Cates evidently went to live with his oldest son in Winston, AL after his wife's death. Son William David Cates lived at Peaks Mill, AL; fought for the Confederacy. Romulus died there, and I believe he must be burried there; I cannot find him in Clayton Co.
I found some of the family buried at Tanners Road Bapt Church Cem., Ellenwood, GA, such as Isaac, b. 12-27-1823, d. 2-8-1891, wife Syrrena, 3-20-1828, d. 7-27-1903. There is also a Y. M. "Ran", b. 2-13-1868, d. 5-31-1945; don't know who he is.
Just for the heck of it I went to Ancestry.com and found many submissions for William, Romulus, other family members. It has anything you may want to know, and are good guides for genealogy. It shows the family was indeed from Orange Co., NC.
