Present Post Office address: Peak's Mill, Alabama; born 9 Jan 1843 at Jonesboro in Clayton County, Georgia; first entered the service as Private on 4 Oct 1861 at Jonesboro, Georgia; in Company F, 2nd Georgia Cavalry and continued until 9 Oct 1863, when I was captured at Sugar Creek, Tennessee and remained a prisoner until 28 Mar when I was exchanged at Richmond, Virginia, then I was permitted to return home. No papers.

Romulus Cates evidently went to live with his oldest son in Winston, AL after his wife's death. Son William David Cates lived at Peaks Mill, AL; fought for the Confederacy. Romulus died there, and I believe he must be buried there;
I cannot find him in Clayton Co.

I saw your post concerning the New Home Cemetery. You are correct about the name being Cates and not Gates. Those Cates folks are my kin, too. I visited that cemetery this past May with my parents and caught the family search bug again. I did photo the tomb but it's pretty hard to read. Getting mossy and brown...
I was delighted to see the military information about William David Cates. I had not seen that before. Do you know any interesting stories about the family? I only know about his daughter, Georgia who was my g-grandmother.

My name is Judy Spaulding. And I am not a direct descendant of the CATES, though there have been many marriages of the CATES between my ancestors brothers and sisters. I was following the CATEs migration pattern with hopes of FINDING SOME OF MY people. It looks like they were together in both Clayton & Henry County, Georgia....but I'm not sure about the Carolinas.
