It gave me goosebumps. It matches almost exactly with a family history compiled by my great uncle Leroy Brigman of Greenville, Texas in 1938. His list also has the dates of death for each. My father, the son of Leroy's brother, James Arthur Brigman, died just last year at age 86 and I inherited a copy of the 1938 document. I decided to look into the family history as a lark. This is too awesome to me, finding the same information on the net. Leroy Brigman was the son of Joshua B. Brigman, who in turn was the son of Malcolm Brigman, son of Joshua and Temperance. How does this fit into the Joyner-Freeman Tree site? Can you please E-mail me any further information you may have or, if I can in any way help to add to the growth of the Brigman Tree, please let me know. Thank you for your attention to this. James Valgene Brigman ---------------------------------------------- Subj: Brigman Family Tree Date: 2/23/2002 6:43:06 PM Pacific Standard Time From: A1CHEFRON To: VCJFreeman Ms. Freeman: How remarkable. I came across the work you have been doing on the Brigman Family Tree on Ancestry.com. I Was doing a search on Malcom BRIGMAN, and I found the entry uder his name that you had created. I am particularly intrigued by the email that you displayed sent to you from James Valgene Brigman. My name is Ronald Keith Brigman, son of James Lowell Brigman who is the son of Robert Malcom BRIGMAN. Robert Malcom BRIGMAN was born 11 Sep. 1879 in Hamilton County, Texas and died 18 Feb. 1968, his last residence was in Maypearl Texas. Robert Malcom BRIGMAN is buried in the Maypearl cemetary. I have traced Robert Malcom BRIGMAN back to the 1880 census for Hamilton County Texas; he is enumerated under the household of his father, J B Brigman, and his age at the time is given as 3/4 of a year. The age listed for J B Brigman in the 1880 census is 23 years, his wife is listed as M J or M A, can't exactly make out the handwriting. On the census form J B BRIGMAN is listed as being born in Texas. I believe J B BRIGMAN may be the same Joshua BRIGMAN who was the father of James Arthur BRIGMAN who was the father of the James Valgene Brigman, (whose correspondence you have entered under information for Malcom BRIGMAN), who was the brother of Leroy BRIGMAN of Greenville, Hunt County, Texas. That would make Robert Malcom BRIGMAN, James Arthur BRIGMAN and Leroy BRIGMAN brothers. Making Leroy BRIGMAN my Great Uncle as well. The dates I have for my grandfather Robert Malcom BRIGMAN are: b 11 Sep 1879 Hamilton County, Texas d 18 Feb 1968 Myapearl, Ellis County, Texas m Nancy Evaline GILMORE, b 29 May 1884 Ellis County, Texas, d 13 Jan 1919 Ellis County Texas Robert Malcom BRIGMAN remarried 1921 to Era Belle BYNUM b 7 Feb 1892 d 9 Jan 1991 Please let me know if these dates match any other research you have. Also, if possible, if you have any contact information for James Valgene Brigman please let me know. I would very much like to contact him about getting a copy of the document left to him by his great uncle Leroy Brigman. If you are reluctant to forward his information to me, please feel free to forward my contact information to him if possible. I was able to locate a James V Brigman using switchboard, www.switchboard.com, and talked with him on the phone today. He is indeed the grandson of my Granfather Robert Malcom Brigman's brother, Leroy Brigman of Greenville, TX. He is sending me the document he referred to in the e-mail message he sent you, meanwhile I am pursuing research, painfully and slowly it seems, on my end at the Irving Library, which has a nice local history/genealogy section. I have contacted my cousins Anita Beth Brigman and Myron Weldon Brigman, who are like myself, and James V Brigman, great grandchildren of Joshua B Brigman, son of Malcom Brigman, son of Joshua and Temperence. We are all somewhat excited about all of this to say the least. I can't thank you enough for taking the time and considerable effort to put together this information and to make it available. I don't know how many months or years worth of effort your efforts have saved me. Many thanks for all of your efforts to date, as soon as I can put together some concrete information on Joshua B Brigman and his father Malcom Brigman, I will forward this information to you. Regards, Ron Brigman -------------------------- Subj: Re: Brigman Family Tree Date: 3/2/2002 10:20:24 AM Pacific Standard Time From: A1CHEFRON To: VCJFreeman Valerie: James V. Brigman is sending me a copy of the document that our great uncle Leroy Brigman prepared in 1938. I hope to have it in a week or so. Once I have received a copy of this document, I intend to make copies and plan to send them to other Brigmans here in TX. My aim is to get a better picture of the Brigmans in TX, and the decendents of Malcom Brigman and his son Joshua B. Brigman. According to the stories I heard when I was young, my great uncle Leroy Brigman was Chief or Police for Greenville, TX. This is definitely turning into an interesting journey of discovery. Regards, Ron Brigman --------------------------- Subj: Re: Brigman record of births and deaths Date: 3/19/02 7:20:02 PM Pacific Standard Time From: A1CHEFRON Valerie: I do have the transcribed text of a letter written by an Ellen Brigman sent to me by Terri Brigman England a few weeks back. History of the Brigmans by Ellen Brigman, Walker County GA Brigmans Provided by: Clayton Smith Calytonsmith@@prodigy.net, 121 Club Villas Dr. E, Aiken, SC 29803, on 2/28/2000, This letter was written by Ellen Brigman when she was approximately 90 years of age. This history was written in Huntsville, AL. (Transcribed from copy of original as written) May 7, 1975 I Ellen Brigman am writing this bit of family history as I remember it told by my mother. Im writing that Tommie McCall Smith and Martha Wheeler Talley and others may know the connection of Brigmans and Wheelers (and why they have to claim me.) In Walker County Ga. East of Pigeon Mt. Is a Valley running North and South known in the early days as Strait Gut Valley. In this valley near the mountain lived a family by the name of Posey. Father South in the valley lived the Wheelers. East of the ridge on the Rome, Ga Co Ringgold, Ga Stage Coach route lived the Brigmans. So Malcom Brigman and Sara Posey married July 27, 1841. Calvin Wheeler and Elizabeth (Bettie) Posiey married I dont have the date. Hope you have it. To - Malcom Brigman and Sara Posey Brigman were born William F Brigman July 12, 1842. Was killed in Va. During Civil War. Harris Brigman no birth date. He died two weeks after coming home from Civil War. Nancy Brigman Jan 6, 1844 no death date. Malcom Brigman, Jr. born March 5, 1847. Died Feb 11, 1859. Susan Brigman, May 11, 1848 Feb 4, 1859. Cynthia Brigman, June 18, 1851 Mar. 22, 1922 (my Mother). Sara Posey Brigman born Dec. 7, 1824 died Dec. 10, 1854 (my Mother Cynthia just 3 yrs old. Remarried - Malcom Brigman and Mary Arthula Brigman April 4, 1855. Their children 2 sons Joshua Brigman July 18, 1856 Aug. 14, 1938. John Brigman May 22, 1858 March 23, 1916. To (have no dates) Calvin Wheeler and Elizabeth Posey Wheeler. Green Wheeler, John Wheeler, Jack Wheeler, Dick Wheeler, Mary Wheeler Harthine, Harriet Wheeler Young. You see my Mother Cynthia Brigman and your grandfather John Wheeler were first cousins. Their mothers being the Posey sisters. Some time in the 1840 Malcom and Sara Brigman moved from Walker County Ga. To East Texas. I dont know how they traveled. I also dont know if Calvin and Bettie Wheeler went at the same time or later. But they were in East Texas during the war I think because they came back to Ga. In 1865 or 1866. Malcom Brigman my mother Cynthia Brigmans father died Feb. 11, 1859. Before his death he requested my mother be sent or brought to Ga. To live with his maiden Sisters. Because of transportation and the War she did not come to Ga till she was 14 yrs old. You may not be interested and Im not a writer, but Ill tell you mothers report of her coming to Ga. With Uncle Cal & Aunt Bettie. Uncle Calvin and Aunt Bettie Wheeler with their family decided to move back to Ga. To Strait Gut Valley from East Tex. I wish I knew the county. They loaded their personal property on wagons and drove to the Red River Shreveport, La. (I think) There they took boat to New Orleans. There transferred to the Missippi river to Memphis, Tenn. From there traveled over land to Ga. When they reached Chickamauga Creek som ten or twelve miles from their destination the creek was out of banks couldnt cross. They camped for several days in a vacant house near by. My Mother visited her Aunts Lincy and Aunt Lizze Brigman but never made her home with them. She loved the Wheelers, Uncle and Aunt and were kind and good to her. She liked being with their young folks. So she remained with them until She and William Brigman a 1st cousin whom she did not know until she came to Ga. Were married Sept. 11, 1870. To them were born Cicero Simmons Brigman July 21, 1871 Oct. 25, 1877 Ida Lee Brigman Nov. 6, 1874 May 23, 1895 Harris M. Brigman Feb 23, 1879 Sept. 14, 1949 Ellen Brigman June 27, 1884 (Had to write all this Brigman history to tell where I came in (Ellen) They moved to Arkansas in Sept 1880. In the mean time John Wheeler and Dei Adams Wheeler had married at that time had two children. Marvin Wheeler and Dell Wheeler. They also moved to Ark. And lived near the Brigmans. And there their daughter Ettie Othela Wheeler was born. They dident stay very long. Decided to return to Georgia. The Brigmans in 1883 moved by wagon to Texas. They were 14 days going through the Indian territory. They settled in Jack county, Texas where I was born. The next year moved to Montague County. Where William Brigman my father died Dec. 5, 1885. While in Ark. Or Texas Cousin Green Wheelers family lived in the same county and attended the Same Church. Most Shure was in Ark. They visited each other a lot. As did John and Dei. After my fathers death Mothers health was not very good chills and malaria. So she moved back to Ga. To live with my fathers parents. After John and Dei Wheeler came back to Ga. Other children were born to them. Elmer Wheeler, Richard Wheeler, Jessie Wheeler, Donna Wheeler and Willie Belle Wheeler. From here you will be able to remember the Whleer history better than I remember. After Aunt Betties death Uncle Calvin made his home with John and Dei Wheeler until his death. I hope you have the Bible record and can get all the dates. So your Great Gran parents Calvin and Bettie Wheeler were like Grand parents to me. As a child I loved to see them drive the old black horse hitched to the high buggy up to our house to spend the day or night. I loved them very much and my mother did too. Aunt Bettie was sick a lot. She had some kind of Severe attacks. Some-thing like gall bladder trouble. They always sent for mother and she would stay two or three days till she was better. Then you know at my mothers death Richard and Freda took me into their home. I furnished my own room but boarded with them till Martha was born. Of course then they needed more room. So the morning I moved out both Freda and I cried. Our fellowship was close. When you need a place to live and some one like Richard says As long as I have a home you have one. You dont for get such words. At least I never have. Tommie know how Ettie and I loved each other. How she took me into her home and cared for me. Girls bless be the ties of love that has bound us togather. I trust as long as I live those Brigman and Wheeler ties will never be broken by us their decendants. I might say that Uncle Cal and Aunt Bettie were Primitive Baptists (Hard Shell). Often had services in their own home by traveling ministers. I remember going to their Church at Warren (Later a School) the 1st Sunday in May all day service. They observed foot washing that day, and you know I was only a small child to me it was an impressive service. Im the wost speller please over look errors. Cant see to write well. Has been a pleasure to write this. Hope will mean something to you. <SNIP> In this letter the dates for Sara Posey are: Sara Posey Brigman born Dec. 7, 1824 died Dec. 10, 1854 These dates make a little more sense. I don't know which dates are correct. I think that the dates for Joahua B Brigman seem reasonably consistent. If you wish to contact Terri England her email address is: tbengland@@yahoo.com She has a lot of information on the Brgimans. When we find Brigmans with the same name in the same place, we can be fairly certain they are the same person, you can't say that about a Smith or a Jones. I think it is important to remember how rare the Brigman name really is. A recent search on Brigman on Genealogy.com revealed 893 entries in the SSDI, there were 674,113 listings for Smith; less than 2 tenths of a percent as many Brigmans as Smiths. More importantly, of the 893 Brigmans listed in the SSDI; I attended the funerals for 8 of them, which means that I attended just under 1% of all the funerals for Brigmans listed with the SSDI, 1% of the Smiths would be 6741. Maybe that is why it is so interesting to study the Brigmans, you really can trace them. You don't really need reams of documentation and corroborating evidence, if the name is Brigman, you can pretty well bet there is a direct connection. Now, spelling errors and sloppy record keeping by bureaucrats too lazy to bother to ask how the name is spelled do pose problem. Good to hear from you again, I'll let you know if I come across anything else of interest. Regards, Ron Brigman
