Pacific Daylight Time From: tjfreeman@@nti.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com I am not sure which Freeman information I have sent you so, I will send you some information that may be duplicates. Here is one: FREEMAN FAMILIES in early Randolph County, Alabama Eli and Hugh Freeman were among the earliest settlers of the Omaha area of Randolph County, Alabama. The Indians were removed and the area was opened for settlement in 1832. HUGH C. FREEMAN appeared in the 1840 U.S. Census of Randolph County, Alabama. He was between 20 and 30 years old and had a wife between 20 and 30 and one male child between 5 and 10 and one male child between 1 and 5 years old.. (The 1840 census identified both the children as male. Subsequent census records indicate the oldest child was a female.) I have not been able to find ELI FREEMAN in 1840 census records, but he did appear in the 1850 U.S. Census of Randolph County with a son eleven years old having been born in Alabama. Some of the living descendants of Hugh and of Eli claim they were brothers, but I have not been able to prove that. The birthplace of both Hugh and Eli are variously listed on census records as South Carolina, North Carolina or Georgia. Throughout the rest of their lives Hugh and Eli lived fairly close together. (The 1850 census gives the age of Eli as 45 years and Hugh as 39.) Five houses from Eli and ten houses from Hugh, another Freeman family was living in 1850. It was composed of John, aged 60, b. in N.C.; Nancy, aged 90 born in N.C.; and a 13 year old girl born in Ga., whose name is not legible though it looks like Caroline or Cornelia. Were they related to Hugh and/or Eli? I have just learned of the existence of a Freeman family cemetery near Omaha where, certainly Hugh Freeman's family members were buried and where possibly Eli was buried. I have been told that at one time there was a small church there. I have not seen the cemetery, but have been told it contains no tombstones with identifying names, only field stones marking the graves. It is in a wooded area without protection from grazing cattle and has had some damage done by persons digging in the area. * Subject: Freemans Date: 3/2/2007 7:25:17 A.M.
