 AN OLD RESIDENT GONE
In the death of Joseph Hickenbottom, SR. which occurred Thursday last, April 6th, another of Jefferson county's oldest residents taken his farewell of earthly scenes. Mr. Hickenbottom was born in Cumberland county, Ken., Oct 10, 1802, and in 1820, at the age of eighteen years, was married to Rebecca Ferguson, in the same county. In 1829 the family removed to Morgan county, Ill., where they resided nine years. In 1839 they came to the county, talking up land in the locality then known as Lockridge, near what is now called Parsonville, the wife dying there in 1861, and the husband continuing to live there until 1868. In 1862 Mr. Hickenbottom was married to Mr. Margaret Moberly, and in '68 they removed to this city, where they lived until 1880, when, both being in feeble health and unable to care for each other, a separation was mutually agreed upon, a home being given to Mrs H. by her husband. mr. H. then went to live with his son, Stephen, near Glasgow, at whose home he died. Mr. Hickenbottom was the father of eleven children, all by his first wife, nine of whom are now living, five sons and four daughters, and all but one son, Charles in ths county.
Though never a robust man Mr. Hickenbottom enjoyed fair heath until 1873 when he was attacked by a disease of the kidneys which clung to him through the rest of his days and finally hastened his death. he was an exemplary man and in all his dealing was strictly honest, upright and exact, and it is said of him that he never had a law suit in all of his years of residence here. He was a hardworking, energetic man and had accumulated considerable property in real estate and otherwise and at one time was one of the heaviest land owners in the county. Though never a member of any church, he was always a firm believer in christianity and accepted the Baptist faith. The funeral occurred on the 7th Inst., from the home of his son, and the remains were interred in Union cemetery, near his old home. A large number of old friends and neighbors followed the remains to their last resting place, among whom were Messrs, J. R. Parsons, Smith Ball and Wm. Taylor, who had known him through nearly all his almost half a century's life in this county. Rev. J. Lee, of the Baptist church, conducted the exercises at the funeral and deliverd an excellent sermon. All that is mortal of Joseph Hickenbottom is gone, but he will have a place in the memory of his friends while their lives last. his patient sufferings are over, and he sleeps the everlasting slumber.
