Continued: Stephen who died in 1824 in Champaign County, Ohio, was married in 1795 in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, to Elizabeth Humphreys. Stephen is listed on the 1820 census in Champaign County (1810 census of Ohio is lost), as being 45 or older with a female also 45 or older, making him born in 1775 or before. The following military records MAY pertain to this Stephen Vinyard: "Stephen Vinyard was paid at Fort Pitt, Virginia, on October 3, 1775, for his military service as a Private under General George Rogers Clark." [Pittsburgh Payroll p 17, Library of Virginia] The first mention of Steven Vinard in Greenbrier County is on a petition he signed on 5 Dec 1780, along with John and George Vinard. He must have been 21 to sign this petition, making his birth year 1759 or earlier. It is possible that this Stephen is the father or uncle of Stephen who married in 1795, although only one Stephen appears at a time in the various petitions and tax records, suggesting this is the same man. On June 13, 1783, Steven Vineyard signed a petition, along with George, John and William Vineyard. Stephen is listed in Greenbrier County, Virginia, tax lists from 1783-1801. Greenbrier County was formed in 1777, and tax lists are available from 1782-1817. Also listed in Greenbrier County from 1782-1803 are John and William Vinyard; George Vineyard from 1783-1786. In the non-alphabetical tax lists these 4 Vinyard men are listed next to each other. John Vinyard married Martha Smith 27 Mar 1794 Greenbrier County. Stephen's wife Elizabeth Humphreys and her seven siblings are named in the will of her father Robert Humphreys which was recorded in adjoining Monroe County, Virginia in 1809 (Monroe was part of Greenbrier County until 1799). At least 4 of Elizabeth's siblings settled in Champaign County, Ohio, or the adjoining Clark County, in the 1810's - James in 1813, Jane wife of Berryman Underwood in 1816, John in 1812 Clark County, and Nancy wife of William Fenton in Clarke Co OH in 1814. Berj/Bery Underwood's estate was probated in Champaign County on 21 Sep 1812, executors Jane Underwood, John Humphreys, James Wilson and William Fenton. Jane Underwood is listed on the 1820 census Mad River Township pg 466 1f45&> 2f10-15 1m16-25, 1m10-15. Stephen's will, written 10 Nov 1822 and probated 18 Sept 1824, in Champaign County, Ohio, names wife Elizabeth, living at time of probate, "eldest son William." "youngest son Stephen," daughters Elizabeth, Jane, Nancy, "eldest daughter Rebecca wife of James Barr." 1820 census Urbana, Champaign County Ohio, pg 438, living next door to each other are James Barr 200010-0001; Stephen Vinyard 1male<10, 1male16-25, 1 male45&up, 1female10-15, 2females16-25, 1female45&> Several on-line genealogies incorrectly give Stephen's father as Francis Vinyard of Loudoun County or Harper's Ferry, Virginia. Francis' son Stephen appears to have settled in Warren County, Ohio, when Stephen, father of William, was in Champaign County, Ohio. The Warren County family, which preferred the Venard spelling, was in Ohio by 1790 (pension record of Thomas Venard), while Stephen of Champaign County appears to have been in Virginia until about 1806, judging by the birthplaces of his children.
