Note: Hazel Mae Burge was the third child born to James and Mahala Burge and the only one to survive infancy. She was born April 8, 1894 in Sprague, Washington. Her family moved to the farm west of Harrington when she was about 11 years old. Hazel was a charter member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church as a child, and remained an active member to her death. Hazel graduated from Harrington High School in 1913 and then went to Whitworth College first located in Tacoma and then moved to Spokane about 1915. She graduated from Whitworth College in 1917 with a degree in Home Economics. Hazel married Noah Herbert Defabaugh on October 15, 1917 at the family home on the farm and then boarded a train to Spokane where they spent their honeymoon at the Davenport Hotel. They then left for Seattle where they lived for the duration of the war. Their first child, Cleda Mae was born in Seattle. Herb and Hazel took over the running of the family farm and lived there until they retired, and moved to Harrington in 1953. They built a brick home on Adams Street in the south of Harrington and lived there until they died. Hazel kept a neat and tidy yard, as well as an immaculate house. She enjoyed cooking and baking and usually had a garden. She had a cat named Penny who lived to be about 18 years old. After Herb died, Hazel took in boarders, usually school teachers who lived in the basement, which had been somewhat converted to an apartment. Hazel was always involved in the church and lived the life of a true Christian. She had diabetes in her later years controlled by diet, and had a bowel obstruction that required several feet of intestine to be removed. Hazel died in her home at her kitchen table after breakfast one morning. Hazel Mae Burge Defabaugh was about 5'2" tall and weighed between 140 and 150 pounds. She had medium to dark brown hair and blue eyes.
