a. Note:   When he was 16 years of age, Charles Boarman entered the Navy as a midshipman and attended the Naval School at the Navy Yard in Washington, D.C. As his records attest, Charles Boarman rose in the ranks of the Navy. He was first assigned to serve on the sloop "Erie" at Baltimore, and then was a midshipman on the brig "Jefferson" on Lake Ontario. During the war of 1812 he again served on the "Erie" and saw services in the Mediterranean from 1814 to 1817. On 3/15/1817, he was commissioned a Lieutenant. After this commission, Lt. Boarman was again in Washington, D.C. Shortly after his marriage he commanded the "Weasel" in the West Indies, and then served as a commander on many ships in many waters. From 10/1/1852 to 10/1/1855 he was in command of the Navy Yard and Station in New York. While holding this assignment, he was a pew holder in old St. James' Church in Brooklyn.
