Note: family home. When her father, John Mattson died 11 Oct 1911 it causedmany problems. The family was fairly well off. John worked in a sawmill and was also a town Alderman. According to my mother, her motherdid not have any knowledge of her husbands businesses etc.. and shelost everything to his various partners. The family ended up destituteHer mother was forced to have the children live with other familys andrelatives. From and old letter I found, a person named Laina Alatalosaid that her Mother was Celia's Godmother. My Mother's birth wasnever recorded in Official Records. We have a copy of a public notice in the Cloquet Pine Knot Newspaperof a foreclosure notice on the home of John and Henrika Mattson. TheMortgage dated 15 Sep 1909 was now in default for $494.10 as of 22 Sep1911 Now of course in 1911, $494.10 was a lot of money. The propertywas to be auctioned on 11 Nov 1911 at 10am. On 14 May 1913, about 18 months after John's death, The Probate Courtof Carlton County, MN removes the children from Henrika Mattson as sheis no longer able to care for the children The Court ordered that: Herman was on his own and working somewhere in International Falls. Celia (13) was sent to the farm of a Gustafson **. Lydia (11) was also sent to this farm **. Henry (8) Sent to Owatonna State Home Lempi (6) Sent to Owatonna State Home. **My Mother always said they worked them like slaves.
