DEATH CLAIMED MR. C.W. LAMAR ON YESTERDAY END CAME IN AFTERNOON AFTER HE HAD SUFFERED FROM LONG ILLNESS
After a long and protracted illness Mr. Charles Winn Lamar passed away at his residence on Brown street yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock. For more than 3 months, Mr. Lamar's condition has been serious, so that his death came not unexpectedly to the members of his family and his wide circle of friends in the city and county. Mr. Lamar passed away in his fifty-ninth year. For many years Mr. Lamar had been one of the best known cotton buyers in Americus having met in that way a large number of the planters of Sumter county and this section. He had an unusually large circle of friends among the farmers of this section. Mr. Lamar was a native of Sumter county having resided here all his life. He was a son of Dr. Thomas Lamar, a prominent physician her. Among the surviving relatives in the immediate family are Mrs. C.W. Lamar, two daughters, Mrs. George Lanier, of West Point, and Miss Ruth Lamar, and three sons, Messrs. Nick Lamar, Frank Lamar, and C.W. Lamar, Jr. Other relatives are Mr. Philo* Lamar, of Columbus, and Mrs. Frank Etheridge, of Jackson. Those of the foregoing relatives not resident here arrived in Americus on trains last evening. In his early manhood Mr. Lamar was manager of very large farming interests in Lee county for a number of years. His friends in that county remember his (him) as a generous, high-minded citizen. After leaving Lee county he went into the cotton business in Savannah for several years. Returning to Americus, he opened up a cotton brokerage business under the firm name of Littleton & Lamar, doing an extensive business for years. He was widely recognized as a sincere friend of the cotton growers, gving them freely the benifit of his wide experience and acute observations of conditions. In his later years he was connected with a large English cotton syndicate with headquarters in Savannah, representing their interests in this territory. Through his long residence here and his amiable character Mr. Lamar gained a large number of friends. In the city and throughout the county are many who knew and esteemed him and will regret to learn of his death. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to his family in their bereavement. Mr. Lamar was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, a Knight Templar and a K. of P. A host of friends will cherish his memory. The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the family residence on Brown street Rev. J.W. Stokes and Rev. O.B. Chester officiating. The pallbearers willl be Messrs. W.E. Brown, C.J. Sherlock, R.L. McLeod, E.C. Parker, W.M. Humber, and W.C. Gray.

  Hi Valerie,
You're welcome, you're welcome. It is exactly for people like you that I compiled these records and put them on the net so they would be available to all.
I am familiar with the C.W. Lamar family and, in fact, lived next door to their house on 216 Brown St. for ten years (1991-2001). It's up for sale, coincidentally. You'll have to check it out when you're here next week. BTW, be prepared to spend at least one day here in Americus. We have two national historic sites, Andersonville and the National P.O.W. Museum and Plains, the Carter Homeplace in Archery as well as Habitat for Humanity International and its new Global Village. I'm on vacation and will be happy to be your tour guide if you would like.
Incidentally, the Lamar family is listed in the 1891 city directory and included Marie, her sister Ruth, and two brothers Nicholas and Frank. Nick Lamar was involved in a murder case in 1910 when he killed Eugene Gunn at a cardgame in the Barlow Block uptown (108-110-112 Jackson St). We have the local papers on microfilm at the library and you can read about the whole thing. It was quite a sensation.
You can reach me at 206 Barlow St., phone 229-924-1921 (it's unlisted so don't lose this).
I look forward to meeting you both in person.
