 In 1852, he operated a hotel in LaGrange, GA. In 1854, he established residence in West Point and operated a grocery store.
  From "Brooks of Honey and Butter: Plantations and People of Meriwether Co., Georgia, " pg. 250:
  ". . .While in LaGrange, Mary Martin stopped at the hotel operated by Reuben and Arabella Crockett Lanier [ca Jan. 1852]. In 1854, when the Atlanta and LaGrange Rail Road was extended to West Point, Georgia and became the Atlanta and West Point Rail Road, the soon moved to West Point and established a grocery store. From Reuben and Arabella Crockett Lanier descended the Lanier families so prominently identified with the cotton mill and textile development of the Chattahoochee River Valley area."
