I saw your page on the Laniers. I was born in the Valley so I'm familiar
with most of them by name and of course J. Smith Lanier. I see that his
mother was Emma Smith. The Laniers spent some time in Tallapoosa and I'm
curious about two things. Who was Emma Smith and why was Feraby Lucy Lanier
buried in my Smith family cemetery? There are four unmarked graves and one
of them is Toliver Washington Smith, husband of Catherine Johnson Smith.
Before the war Toliver's estate was ca $70K and after the war he was
destitute and buried in an unmarked grave.

The Smith Cemetery is two miles SW of Reeltown, Tallapoosa, AL, in someone's
backyard. Most of the later Smiths are buried in the Reeltown Cemetery but
there are eight graves in this one. Four are marked; F. L. E. Lanier
 (5/10/1832 - 3/18/1845) d/o R. & A. E. Lanier, A. Johnson, Eppie Johnson,
Catherine Johnson Smith. One of the unmarked is Toliver Washington Smith.
There has to be some close connection between these Laniers and my Toliver
Washington Smith to be buried in the same family cemetery and for the Smith
name to be so common in the Lanier family. I'm just beginning to research
this connection and would appreciate any additional info you might provide.

Alexander Campbell Lanier had a sister named Feraby Lucy Lanier. Feraby is buried in my Smith Family Cemetery in Reeltown. I cannot figure out why she is buried there. I dont know of an Emma Smith in that immediate family. I would guess that J Smith Lanier got his name from one of those Smith sources. Do you know anyone who might have a clue? I have about 40 Freeman in my data base but I havent concentrated on any on them as yet.
