E. McCammon, a prominent business man came down from Spokan Falls, feeling good toward all old friends and especially one Peter LaMar, a "fallen" young lawyer, said to be a Southern gentleman from Georgia, claiming to be a nephew of Senator LaMar, a highly distinguished statesman of that state. Be this as it may, young LaMar is no doubt well connected, has been well raised and well educated but he loved the social cup and gaming table too well and it brought him where he sleeps tonight, in a dark and gloomy prison cell. Peter Lamar (sic) first asked the loan of $2.50 of his friend, whom he had not seen for weeks and he got it. He went to the theatre and then back to the Stine House and all seemed to be happy, but it appears LaMar kept a vigilant eye on his man, for that night Mr. McCammon retired for the night with $85 in his pants pockets and in the morning when he got up his pockets were empty and no one knew who made so bold, until Lamar, "dead" broke before, became suddenly "flush" and spent the "filthy" lucre lavishly, as though he had struck a mint. Mr. mcCammon, on hearing this, forthwith smelled a large sized "mice" and had him arrested for grand larceny. When collared by the sheriff, LaMar stepped in the stor (sic) room at the Stine House saloon for something, where afterwards the missing pistol was found and also $75 of the cash, deposited by accused, in Dr. Tiernau's safe, but the most startling discovery was unearthed, when Lamar (sic) was searched, as prisioners are when arrested. Upon his person was found a check, sent though the mail by A. M. Cannon, banker at Spokan Falls to and in favor of Wm. N. Smith, for the sum of $343.03, already endorsed with Smith's name forged thereto. "This check," LaMar said to Billy Meyer, about an hour before arrested, "I will get cashed this morning and them pay all my debts." But the sheriff cut his good (?) intentions short. At first he was put under a thousand dollars bond, but as his best friends refused to go on it, he went to jail and is now liable to be indicted not only for grand larceny, but also for forgery and robbing the U.S. mail. To us the affair looks almost incredible for LaMar has neither the appearance nor make up of a bad man, on the contrary he looks rather prepossessing and honest, but his case is certainly very damaging to both his good looks and fair name, and while despising the sin, we pitty the sinner. N. B. -- Since the above is in type, we learn that LaMar was a comparative stranger to McCammon, and not a friend, but loaned him $2.50 because he thought he needed it. - - - ` "The Daily Oregonian" Portland, Multnaomah Co., Oregon Monday Morning, December 6, 1880 Washington Territory Peter Lamar of Walla Walla, was taken to the U. Pacific Standard Time From: tepcotom@@netzero.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com Hi Valerie, Hope all is well with you and yours---I have some more information that I received last week. I am still waiting for Cook Farnum's death certificate---I think I may have went about ordering it the slow way, I ordered it on-line, an informational copy, and didn't pay extra for an expedited copy so it looks like it will take a while. But I was able to obtain some prison records for Peter Lamar from Washington State. I still think that was who Cook was but still haven't proved it. Here is what the most important part says: "Born in Georgia. Age 22 years, but looks about 28. height 5 foot 9 inches. black eyes. black hair and a clear dark complexion. round features. nicely built and weighs about 180 pounds. a lawyer by profession and has parents living in Georgia. Has practiced some in Walla Walla (W. T.)" From this description, now I'm not too sure that he was the Peter from Americus. The age is about right but by Dec. 2, 1880, the day he arrived at McNeil's Island, both Thomas Cato and Mary Elizabeth were deceased, unless I missed something. So I'm kind of back to the drawing board on that. I found a short bio on-line about my Grandfather Lucius L. Farnum, and in it it says that Cook Farnum was a "pioneer oil-well driller in the Los Angeles fields" so I just bought three books about the Union Oil Co. I haven't really started reading them yet but skimmed one and saw that the oil stuff started about 1883 around Los Angeles. That would be just about the time that Peter Lamar was released. The record from Seatco Territorial Penitentiary, where he was taken after serving two years at McNeil's, shows that he was pardoned on Dec. 17. 1882, or 83, it's very hard to make out, no matter how hard I try, but it looks like he was pardoned by the Gov. of the Washington Territories, Governor Newell. I know this is all a process and sometimes I just want to quit and forget it but I can't, it kind of takes on a life of it's own. I'm always looking for clues in the Lamar books I read. Just finished one about Mirabeau B. Lamar, the 2ND president of the Republic of Texas. Great reading. Luckily, we have a wonderful librarian that helps me get some truly rare and antique books on them. Hope you are staying dry down there! Pacific Standard Time From: tepcotom@@netzero.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com Dear Valerie, I found your email on genealogy.com and I see that your husbands GG Grandfather was Charles Winn Lamar. Charles had a brother, Peter. Do you happen to have any information on him? I am doing my genealogy and am hitting a brick wall, but I'm not giving up! My G Grandfather was a Lamar from Georgia. Sometime between 1880 and 1894 he changed his name to Cook Farnum. All of his 3 children had the Lamar name as the middle name and that tradition has carried down. My name is Thomas Lamar Farnum, Jr. Most of the Lamar Farnums are either dead, or I have lost contact with them. I have reason to believe that Cook Farnum was actually Peter Lamar but am having trouble proving it. He got in a bit of trouble in Walla Walla, WA and was sentenced to prison in late 1880. He married a Jane Cooper in Los Angeles in 1894. I'm not sure if this is the same Peter from Americus, but there doesn't seem to be that many Peter Lamars from that generation coming from Georgia. I found out recently that he supposedly kept in touch with an uncle and I was delighted to find that he did have an uncle, J.B. Lamar, brother of Thomas Cato Lamar, who removed to California in 1849 and ended up fairly close to where I live now, in Mendocino County. I live in Willow Creek, CA, Humboldt County. Anyway, any information you may have would be helpful. Thank-you and Happy New Year! Thomas Lamar Farnum, Jr. * United States, Naval Enlistment Rendezvous, 1855-1891 Enlistments at Mare Island, Cal. Wednesday Morning July 21, 1886 OBTAINING MONEY BY FRAUD HOW PETER LAMAR SECURED AND USED DAVID P. BOND'S FUNDS. HE CONFISCATES A $1,000 CERTIFICATE WHICH HE WAS TO SEND TO BOND'S SISTER. REPRESENTS THAT HE RECEIVED IT AS A QUIT CLAIM. On April 12 a neatly dressed man, apparently a foreigner, called at Mr. Henry Heil's boarding house, 315 Pennsylvania avenue, and desired to register. He accepted the terms of the proprietor, and signed himself in a good round hand "Cook Farnum, Rome, GA." Mrs. Heil, who was present at the time, felt some interest in her guest, and laughingly said that at first she took him for a foreigner. Farnum, who accepted the situation, told the lady that he was a seafaring man. "I have just come from China," said Farnum, "where I left my ship, on board of which I was master-at-arms. I have seen a good deal of the world. My object in coming here is to get the government to pay me my transportation money to this country. I had to pay my passage home, which the government should have done for me." Mrs. Heil who is interested in foreign missions, found Farnum filled with missionary facts. He did not hesitate to tell her interesting stories about China, the Chinese, and the missionaries there. He, however, told further about himself, and that the name he registered was fictitious. He said that he entered the United States navy under that name, but that his proper name was Peter Lamar, and claimed that he was a first cousin to Secretary Lamar. This claim he made known to several inmates in the house during his eight weeks stay there. His pleasant and agreeable manners brought him into confidential relationship with a few of the boarders. Among those who reposed much confidence in him was Mr. David P. Bond, of Lawrence, Kan. The friendship that seemed to exist between the men made Mr. and Mrs. Heil bestow considerable favors upon Farnum alias Lamar, as Mr. Bond was much liked by them. On May 25 Mr. Bond being sick was sent to Providence Hospital. Lamar visited him there two or three times. The last visit Lamar made to Bond, on his return, he stated that the sisters in charge deemed it best that Mr. Bond should be sent to the insane asylum. About the same time he announced that he was daily expecting a position in one of the departments which he had applied for on arriving here. Coupled with this expected good fortune was a statement that his brother, Frank Lamar, had sent to the bank of Bateman & Co. a quit claim title that had been left him (Peter) in the family estate, and in signing which he would receive $1,000. This happy news made him the hero among his friends, who showered congratulations upon him. Soon afterward he met his friends, and had in his possession considerable money. He told them that when he signed the deed the money was payed over to him by the bank. He bought two expensive suits of clothes, a silk hat, a first class cane, and other accessories to a gentleman's outfit. For a few days he was the lion among his friends, whom he kindly remembered with little favors and treats of champagne. A night or so before leaving his boarding house he deposited $800 with Mr. Heil for safekeeping. He remarked at the time that a Col. Pacific Standard Time From: tepcotom@@netzero.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com Hi, I haven't been back to my computer for a week. Somewhere I found that Cook Farnum died on Nov. 11, 1916. He was also supposedly born in Feb. 1860. I can't match that up to any Peter Lamar born in GA but my theory is that he changed his age when he became Cook. I could be wrong about his first name as a Lamar but I have several clues as to why I think it was Peter and why I think he was from Americus but when this is all said and done, hopefully, one day, I may find out that he was actually a different Lamar. With all of the lawyers and politicians in that family they could have helped him. Plus, supposedly he was a young lawyer, but after he got in trouble in Walla Walla, I don't think he practiced law. I am waiting for prison records and I also asked an old aunt I have in Santa Cruz by way of a Christmas card but the whole thing about these Lamar Farnums is that this was all supposed to be a secret and never revealed so I'm not sure I'll ever get the truth from whats left of the small handful of my family on my dads side. So I go on, getting great pleasure out of being a history detective and approaching this as a case to be solved. I haven't emailed Mr. Anderson yet or checked on the death cert. as I have been busy up here in these storms trying to stay warm! TLF - - - Subject: Cook Farnum's info---WOW! Date: 1/9/2008 5:30:43 P.M. Pacific Standard Time From: tepcotom@@netzero.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com Dear Valerie, WOW!!!! I don't even know what to say. Thank-you so much for finding that information. I'm going to be on it right away and will certainly let you know what I find out. Everything is hanging on who Cook's parents were. I'm going to hope for the best and hope to GOD that whoever helped make out that death certificate knew the right information. I don't know how many months or years it will take to get the prison records. I know that when you are dealing with Washington, D.C., it could be awhile. I may be placing to much emphases on it, but it seems to me that while he was still a Lamar, he may have been more willing to tell the truth and put down the proper facts. Not that the death cert. won't, but I tell you, I have had so many set-backs with this research that I never get too excited, but do allow myself a little! That is so cute that you offered to do a drive-by of Charles place. I looked up his address several years ago on ZABA search, but didn't write it down. One of the things I'm waiting for is to get this genealogy correct so I will actually have something to tell him. I never had any children. If I had, I would want them to know their history. Once I know something I will have something to tell. There is a message on genealogy.com by a Mikki Coon. She is my second cousin. It's titled Lamar to Farnum. In it she gives some information that had been vital, especially the Walla Walla connection. She also tells part of a story that I was told as a kid. Some of it wasn't true. I tried to contact her but never heard back from her as I started to get information. Anyway, I will eventually find a way to contact her, Charles (Chuck), and some other relatives that are out there some where. Thanks again, Valerie. You have done more research on the Thomas Cato Lamar line that I've seen on the net. I look at it again and again looking for clues. I really feel like I have come to "know" them through your research. Even if I find that I'm not exactly from that line I will still treasure the experience of the research. Pacific Standard Time From: tepcotom@@netzero.net To: VCJFreeman@@aol.com Gosh, the information just keeps flowing!!!!! I know it can get corny after awhile, but THANK-YOU! I have the death certificate info. underway and hopefully will be receiving it soon. I can hardly wait. I will be looking up the grave finder information. This is exciting. Just a short back story on the posting by Micki Coon. She was obviously told a similar story about Cook. I was told that he was a lawyer and he was in court and someone called him a "son-of-a bitch", and he promptly pulled out a gun and shot him dead! I honestly never believed it because I always knew that as wild as the west was, this was a little far fetched. But the first time my dad told me this I was about 11 years old and in the same conversation he also said that he wanted to name me "Peter" when I was born. That was a clue that went unused until Aug. of last year when someone who is doing genealogy on Jane said, "we will never know who Cook Farnum really was". That was a challenge to me and when my sister and I talked about it I told her this story of what our dad had told me and she said, "maybe Cook was actually named Peter". Wow! I had never put that together before. So, by finding Micki's posting and using the Walla Walla connection, I ended up finding the Washington State Digital Archives and finding that there was a Peter Lamar who was prosecuted in 1880 for forgery, U.S. Mail theft, and grand larceny. As if that didn't blow my mind enough, I found a news article on that same website that described the whole account of the crime in detail and then one week later I almost accidentally found that he was sentenced to 4 years in the U.S. Penitentiary. The title of the news article is, "A Disgraceful Episode". It was reprinted in the Spokan Times, from the Walla Walla Watchman in late Nov. 1880. So this all made sense to me of why someone would change their name and make a more folksy story out of it. Of corse, I still haven't proved that that was actually Cook Farnum, and if his name was Peter, which Peter it was. Which brings me back to the death cert. and my good fortune to have found your postings and somehow knew that I needed to contact you. There will be more later. Getting back to why Cook changed his name, my dad told me that in order for him to practice law again, he had to change his name. I haven't found any evidence that he actually practiced law under any one of those names, but who knows? I think I still may have more to find out. Have a wonderful day!!! Every little thing is so interesting. Tell me how to get information about the Lamar mailing list, please. Haven't heard of that yet. I will check the GA page to see the scans of Peter's brothers and father, Thomas. I found a pen and ink sketch of Thomas Cato's brother, Joesph Basil (J.B.) Lamar in the Mendocino History Book. It was shocking when I first saw it, my father had a similar look at a certain time in his life. It was the first time I really believed that I was on the right track. I would be happy to send you a copy, but I will have to do it by snail-mail, so I will need your mailing address. Eventually I will have all of the equipment to do scans, print, fax, etc. Right now I'm working on an old dinosaur with no amenities, not even a printer. You asked if the cemetery information was completed on Cook's death cert. As you can imagine by now, of course not. I went to some different places on-line and actually found him listed on a Santa Barbara Mortuary page, but there were blanks, not filled in, like where exactly they buried him. I've come to expect these blanks, he was a tricky man, and that has lasted well beyond his death. But I'm not negative or pessimistic at all any more. When I look at all I've collected on him and or Peter, It all makes sense in a strange way. There was some information on the d.c. that fit with everything else. Like, " How Long In California"-answer, "About 30 Years". Occupation-Notary Public, Insurance Salesman, Family Justice of Peace. Sounds like something someone who was trained as a lawyer might do if they were not able to practice law anymore. Today my Mother's house went into escrow and since I live with her to help her out and have helped her sell this house, if all goes as it should, we will be moving to Redding, CA in about 29 days. I actually haven't been on the internet much. As soon as we get settled I'm going to get a new lap-top and really be able to get some research done. I also want to get copies of J.B. Lamar's bio's and send them to you. He was a very interesting man, an original '49er, ended up a man of note in California history. When I can get to it I want to try to find some of his descendants. Here is a quick, amazing story--I grew up on the Hoopa Valley Indian Reservation. I have known a family there, the Beeson's, literally all my life. Turns out J.B. Lamar married an Anderson from Mendocino County. Mr. Anderson was married to a widow that he brought out on a wagon from Missouri. She had children from her first marriage that came with them. She had been married to a Beeson and sure enough, the same Beeson's. The one I'm closest to is suppose to be checking on one of his family members that still lives in Mendocino Co. who is into genealogy and hopefully she will have some information about what became of the family line of basically the half sister of the first Beeson's in CA. Hope all is well there in SoCal----I know, it is hot here too! His mother was Jane Cooper Farnum Berger Ritter. His father is listed on the birth certificate as Cook Farnum. He was born in Georgia on a plantation with three or four other brothers. He was a lawyer and moved to Walla Walla Washington. We are missing the link where he went from Lamar to Farnum. Someone was shot in a court room and the next thing we know cook was in los angeles and marries jane cooper. Does anyone have any idea what happened? I am trying to find out all I can about my grandfathers family. Please help.
