Notes
a. Continued:   Grant Family Paper: "Robt. S. Grant was born February 18, 1813. ... His father’s name was Jacob Yerkes Grant, born in Pa., 1786, married in Charlston, Virginia, March 22, 1810, to Nancy King.  Her birth, March 6, 1787.  She died June 2, 1862.  Jacob Yerkes Grant died March 11, 1863, near Greensburg, Ind.  He was a farmer.  A Presbyterian and Democrat."
Jacob Grant and Nancy King were married in Frederick County, VA, on 20 Mar 1810, and must have left immediately for Shelby Co., KY, where they appear on the 1810 census. They are listed in Shelby County in the 1820 and 1830 censuses. In 1840, 1850, and 1860 censuses they are in Decatur County, IN. Jacob Grant appears on the 1812 and 1813 Shelby County tax lists, but owns no land. From 1814 to 1830 he lists 80 acres on Tick Creek. He owned 1 horse in 1812. This number increased to 5 by 1830. The tax lists from 1831-1839 are either lost or partially illegible, so it is not clear what year Jacob left Shelby County. Between 1830 and 1837 Jacob moved to Decatur County, IN, where he remained for the rest of his life.
In both the 1850 and 1860 censuses Jacob is listed as a farmer in Adams Township. In 1850 his real estate is valued at $2000. In 1860 his real estate is valued at $4800 and his personal property at $1000. An 1882 Atlas of Decatur County shows the Grants residing in the south central 1/4 of Section 21, Adams Township. Jacob made his will on 19 Jan 1863. In the will Jacob leaves the 130 acres on which he resides to his children Mary F., Marian B., William T., and his grandaughter Susan Jane, daughter of his son Robert S., in 4 equal parts, excepting the following legacies: $300 to daughter Margaret K. Hamilton or her children if she dies first; $50 to Jacob W. and Hester McLane, children of deceased daughter Sarah Jane McLane, as they become of age; $50 of Benton and Jacob W. Sloan, children of deceased daughter Elizabeth Ann Sloan, as they become of age. Jacob directs his son William to manage the real estate and stock for his two sisters as long as they remain unmarried, and Jacob's son Robert to manage his daughter Sarah Jane's share until she marries. All of the children listed in the will are also in the Grant Family Paper. The GFP lists an additional son Edwin R. He does not appear on any of the census records, and presumedly died young without issue. Children are called "all dead" in the GFP.
