Note: Kansas Historical Society Microfilm S904 The Courier-Tribune June 27, 1963 George Schmitz George Schmitz, a good farmer, a fine citizen, man whose solid community and family life will honor his memory, died Monday, June 24, 1963 at the University of Kansas Medical center, Kansas City. Mr. Schmitz was born at Seneca, Kansas, on July 21, 1886, the son of Joseph Schmitz and Helen Novak Schmitz. He moved on March 1, 1903 to the farm 10 miles northwest of Seneca that was his home for the rest of his life. On July 22, 1914, at St. Mary's; church, St. Benedict, he married Louise Oenbring. His wife survives, and their children: Mrs, Helen Bergman of Baileyville, Clarence of the home, Francis of Horton, Adrian of Centralia, Norbert of Axtell, Mrs, Martha Engelken of Vermillion, Lambert of Topeka, and Mrs. Norita Rempe of Hutchinson. There are four living brothers; William of Palo Alto, California, John and Frank of Seneca address, and Rev. Edward Schmitz, assistant at Sts. Peter and Paul church, Seneca. Deceased brothers are Joseph, Rev. Sylvester, O.S.B. and Peter Schmitz. There are 36 living grandchildren. George Schmitz spent his whole life in the Seneca-St. Benedict community. He had rarely been sick during .his lifetime until his last illness. A malignant tumor developed in his left lower jaw, and he was operated on at the medical center June 14. He suffered a stroke after the operation, and a second stroke on Monday, June 24 and died a few hours later. Services were held Wednesday morning at 10:00 at St. Mary's church, St. Benedict. A Solemn Funeral Mass was sung by Rev. Edward Schmitz, O.S.B., assisted by Rev. Edward Roberts of Baileyville, deacon, who also preached the sermon; Rev. V. Kongs of Horton, sub-deacon, and Rev. Donald Redmond, O.S.B. master of ceremonies. The servers of the Mass were grandsons, Galen; and Irvin Bergman, and Mark and Leon Schmitz. Burial was at the St. Mary's cemetery, where his father and mother are buried. The pallbearers were four grandsons, Eugene and Robert Bergman, Vincent and Raymond Schmitz, and Leonard and Vernuss Oenbring. . Honorary pallbearers were Tony Rottinghaus, Paul Skoch, Francis Sudbeck, Frank Stuke, Ed. Skoch and Leon Schmitz. Those from a distance who attended the service included Mrs. ,Joseph Schmitz and son , Joe of Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Lee Lichteig and family of Greeley, Mrs. Margaret Wilson and daughter, Kansas City; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schmitz of St. Joseph, Mo.; and Mr. and Mrs. Claude Stallbaumer, Pawnee.
