Note: Born in Broadwater, but later moved to Pulborough There was a will made in 1795, which was proved in 1798. There a several references to TB: 1) Thomas Backshell was a churchwarden or overseer of the poor in Pulborough in 1767. 2) In the poor law index there is a reference to a Thomas Backshell as overseer of the poor in the parish of Alfold, when he appears on a settlement certificate of Henry Harwood and Joanna his wife, dated 4 November 1759. 3) An apprenticeship indenture in which John Ruson(?) was indentured to Thomas Backshall, yeoman.
