Family
Marriage:
Notes
a. Note:   There is strong evidence that Peter Stitcher and his brother, John, lived in Frederick, Md., at one point in time. Confusion between the Stitcher and Stricker families can, perhaps, be explained by this conjecture. Both families had a Catherine, Jacob and John George. Peter was also a cabinetmaker and apparently did not fare as well in business, as his father. In 1833, Peter applied for an Innkeeper's license, in Frederick County. Born March 22, 1785, he died relatively young, on June 8, 1838. Established, to some degree, Peter took a wife, Catherine Felty, on April 30, 1807, in the Zion Lutheran Church, Baltimore. There is no evidence of children, resulting from this marriage. Peter appeared in only one Census, that of 1820, in Frederick. The Felty marriage was revealed by research at the Baltimore County Historical Society. Henry J. Retzer's "The German Regiment of Maryland and Pennsylvania" is the volume where Stauffer and Decker can be found, with the latter possibly being a deserter. The German Regiment served, among other posts, at New Market, New Jersey, under General Washington. Later, they served at Fort Wyoming, on the Susquehanna River. General Arthur St. Clair and Col. Johan George Stricker, father of John George Stricker, also served in New Jersey. The road between Washington's headquarters in Morristown and New Market (called Quibbletown) ran across Green Brook and through Dunellen, New Jersey. When Peter Stitcher died, he left his entire estate to his wife, Catherine Felty Stitcher. Due to the death of John, who is the father of Eleanor's seven children, great hardship was suffered by the family. Both John George and Peter Henry Clay Stitcher were forced to work menial jobs to keep the family together. One of their sisters, Mary, has proven traceable ,through Edith Walker. Both sons lost children to illness in their early years, perhaps due to lack of proper medical care.
