a. Note:   Christopher Gray evidently did not care for farming, as he left the Hudson, Michigan operation for his brother, Edward, to run. Edward had several sons to help him, including Edward, Jr., who stayed on the family farm, after the family moved to Toledo. Christopher raised his children in Adrian, Michigan, a growing community and practised blacksmithy. His son, Edward Francis, learned the trade from him. Whether by accident or disease, Christopher died, leaving the burden on Clarice. Eventually, Clarice sold the family home and moved back to Piscataway with her brood. Her youngest daughter, Mary, married a Piatt. Christopher's middle name was probably Matthew, as he had a son by that name and LDS files show " M.", as his middle initial, on the couple's marriage record.
  If Ann Gray did have a sister, Mary, perhaps Clarice named her daughter after her.
