Notes
a. Note:   Not much is known of Nelson, except that he fathered several children and had an unmarried sister, Elizabeth. The Samptown Baptist cemetery (Hillside) contains the remains of several generations of Giles family members, indicating they did not stray far from home. The Piatt family had several members participate in the Revolution, but no Giles soldiers are found. It is not known is they were Loyalists. Southern Giles, in Virginia, volunteered two sons for "Morgan's Rifles", which was active in several historic battles. By 1859, Christopher Gray had married Clarice Giles and moved to a Hudson, Michigan farm with his brother, Edward. Land Grants, prevailed in Michigan, at that time, because in the 1870 Census, nine Piatts lived in counties surrounding Lenawee. Nathaniel Piatt, who grew up in Hackettstown, N.J., near Schooley's Mountain (Quaker), lived in the county adjacent to the Gray boys'. Buried in Samptown Cemetery were: Catherine Van Ness Giles, Emmaline Giles, Experience Martin Giles, Jacob Giles, Louisa Runyon Giles, Lydia Ann Giles, Mary E. Giles, Nelson B. Giles, Nelson M. Giles, Samuel S. Giles, Mary Gray Piatt and Matthew Gray.
