Notes
a. Note:   It is certain that Samuel Giles was Experience Martin's husband. Samuel Giles married a Susan, born 1792, and had: Henry 1830, Joel 1833 and Samuel A., a blacksmith. Possibly, Christopher Gray learned blacksmithy from this individual. It is possible that Samuel had two wives, Experience and Susan. For certain, Experience bore a son, Nelson, in 1817. She was from Hunterdon County, an area where New England transplants lived, fleeing from rocky soils, too poor to farm. Experience died and was buried in Samptown Baptist cemetery on April 20, 1824. In the 1850 Census, Samuel's household included: Frances Consha, born 1832 in Ireland and Ann Gray, born 1835 in Ireland and sister to Christopher and Edward Gray. Also on the farm were laborers James McMann, born 1819 and Patrick Galiger, born 1814, from Ireland. An area of Piscataway still carries the name, "Galligher's Corner". South Plainfield was originally part of the "Piscataway Plantation". Immigrants arrived at the port of Perth Amboy, farmed Woodbridge, then moved westward to Piscataway. The Giles family is noted in Woodbridge, as early as 1635. Several early families intermarried in the Piscataway area, including: Huguenots, Rongnion (Runyon) and Piatt , and, Tindall, Drake, Martin, Dunham, Van Vliet, Wykoff, Quick, Shotwell, Dunn, Voorhies, Venable, Van Ness, Collins, Van Nuys, Tidd, Williamson, Smalley, Hull, Van Tyne, La Rue and FitzRandolph. The Dutch families had originally settled in various parts of New York and in Bergen County, N.J. The Germans were mainly in Essex, Morris, Middlesex and Somerset counties. Some of the intermarriages in or around Piscataway were; Tindall-Piatt, Piatt-Wykoff, Quick-Smith, Dunham-Piatt, Martin-Dunham, Giles-Martin, Dunham-Bonham, Dunham-Martin, Giles-Voorhies, Giles-Venable, Giles-Runyon, Gray-Giles, Giles-Collins, Giles-Van Nuys Nevius, Piatt-Williamson, Piatt-Quick, Piatt-Smith, Smalley-Martin, Dunham-Smalley, Hull-Martin, La Rue-Voohees, Van Tyne-Van Ness (Nuis), Dunham-Van Tyne and Dunham-FitzRandolph. In Plainfield, the Reverend Drake's home sheltered no less an eminence than General George Washington, himself, between New Jersey battles.
TEMPORARY HISTORY OF EARLIER GILES FAMILY MEMBERS
There is a huge gap between what is known of the early Giles family in the 1600's, and, the birth of Samuel Giles, ca. 1790, in Piscataway. Members appear to have come from several areas of England, including Wiltshire and Somersetshire. The spelling of the surname was both Gylles and Giles. The following is an illustration of the connection to New Hampshire, with the Olden family. Associated families, such as Dunn, Martin and Hull, also moved down to Woodbridge and Piscataway, from New England.
  Thomas Olden b. 1706
 Wm. Olden b. ca. 1660 m. Eliz. Giles b. 1666 on: 1687, Pisc.
 F. Thomas Olden M. Mary Witherell F. James Giles (Major) b. 1640 M. Eliz. Tidd b. 1642
  F. Matthew Giles b. 1610, Dover, N.H. M. Elizabeth b. 1613, Dover, N.H. We can also follow MATTHEW GILES, in the "Roach Genealogy", from their website: Iroach.uneb.edu?matthewI.htm
Matthew was born WFT between 1582 and 1618 (matching above dates). he m. Elizabeth in 1639, in Dover, N.H. She died in Woodbridge, N.J.
 Children: Phebe b. ca. 1611-1659, Matthew b. 1661, Braintree, Mass., James b. 1640, Woodbridge, d. 1690, Bound Brook, N.J.
Following up on JAMES GILES, in the "Roach", we find James b. 1640, Woodbridge, m. ElizabethTidd, who was supposedly his second wife. Elizabeth, b. May 1642, Essex. Mass., was the dtr of Samual Tidd and Sarah. Elizabeth d. July 22, 1699. Major James Giles came to Boston in 1699.
 Children: Mary (m. Booth), Matthew (m. 1/ Katherine 1690 Woodbridge 2/ Phebe Hendrick Nov 18, 1695 Woodbridge), Elizabeth b. 1666 England, Ann b. April 15, 1669, Braintree, Judith Jane b. March 18, 1670, Woodbridge (m. John Worth 1694 Woodbridge), Sarah b. 1673-75, Pisc.-d. Feb 4, 1758 Stony Brook, N.J.,(m. John Worth, 1693, Pisc.).
Further to Elizabeth b. 1666: she m. Wm. Olden b. 1660. Ann m. Benj. Clark, s/o Benj. and Ann Phipps, on Dec. 25, 1689.
A SECOND history of MAJOR JAMES GILES appears in metronet, contributor unknown:
James b. 1629, England-d. 1690. he m. Elizabeth u/k (Tidd) and produced Matthew, Elizabeth, Ann and Mary. Children do match the "Roach". Birthdate and birthplace fail to match, for Major James.
A THIRD history of JAMES comes from a Gendex file on the internet. It has him immigrating from Kent, England, to Boston, in 1668. His dates are 1626-1688 and he married Elizabeth Tidd, b. 1642, of Salem, Mass. They had a daughter, Jane, of Woodbridge, who married John Worth, producing a son, Richard. JAMES left Boston and had a farm in Maine, which lasted six years, until Indians sacked it, in 1675. He returned to Boston, then Southold, L.I., N.Y., in 1680. He then moved to Piscataway, in 1681, and became a Justice of the Peace, two years later.
On WorldConnect Project, Robert Brian Stewart, has supplied information on RANDALL GYLLES, b. ca. 1585, in England. He m. JOANE HOLBROOKE, January 14, 1609-10. Joane was bapt. ca. 1587, in St. John the Baptist Church, Glastonbury, Somersetshire. Her first marriage was to Nicolas Bennet, b. ca. 1585, on June 3, 1605. Joane's parents were William Holbrooke, b. ca. 1561, Somersetshire, and, Edith Saunders b. 1539, Thornbury, Gloucestershire.
THE LINE FROM THE NEW HAMPSHIRE GILES FAMILY, TO SAMUEL GILES ca. 1790, IS NOT CERTAIN. WHEN THE CONNECTION IS MADE, THE FTM WILL BE FILLED IN. G.E.S.-1/12/2001
