Note: Eleanor (Ellen) Colgate is the daughter of John Colgate, born 1743, in Baltimore, and Elleanor (Ellen) Ashman, born 1744, baptized St. Paul's Parish, Baltimore. The couple married February 17, 1781. John's parents were John Colgate, born in 1713, and Honor Tulley. Elleanor had a sister, Elizabeth Ashman, born 1742, Baltimore, who married a Richard Colgate. Sir Richard Colgate married Rebecca, daughter of Eleanor Herbert, in 1707, per Robert Barnes' "Maryland Marriages". Eleanor Colgate, born 1802, is sister to Edward Colgate, the second husband of Catherine Felty Stitcher. At the age of fifty-seven, it appears impossible for Elleanor to be the mother of Eleanor. The 1744 birth date for Ellen Ashman appears reasonable, but a Gen website indicates she had a sister, Sarah, who was born as late as 1765. Children are normally listed in birth order and this particular website listed Ellen just before Sarah, making possible a birth date in the area of 1760. This would mean Jemima Murray Ashman delivered her children between 1740 (George) and 1765 (Sarah). Ellen Ashman would have been around 42, when Eleanor Colgate was born.
