Notes
a. Note:   From the records of the Saugus Historical Society we have the following report on Charles:
He was born in Lincoln, Massachusetts and was living in Saugus in 1850. He was 19 years old and a cordwainer (or shoemaker) at that time. On August 6, 1862, Charles enlisted, and was mustered in on August 23, 1862, to Company A of the 40th Regiment Mass. Voluntary Infantry. The 40th Regiment saw hard service during the Civil War. It participated in all of the actions of the Peninsula Campaign, the weary marches up and down the James River, and the expedition to Florida. Company A missed Gettysburg by one one day's march. There were at the massacre of Cold Harbor and several other major battles. Almost 30 men from Saugus were in the 40th Regiment. Charles was discharged, October 30, 1863* because of disability. His name is included in the list on the monument at the Saugus Center rotary.
*This date is from the "Saugus Herald" series of 1926, "A Saugus History of the Civil War". However, the Massachusetts Soldiers & Sailors volume states that Charles was discharged on November 29, 1862 at Washington, D.C.
