a. Note:   Merit (Merrett) Vanlandingham, sixth child of James and Elizabeth Vanlandingham, was born 8 February 1792 about three miles from Paris, Bourbon Co., Kentucky. He married in Bourbon County by 1821 to Elizabeth Barker. One descendant says his wife was Mary Harg. Merit drowned in Perche Creek near Columbia, in Boone County, Missouri on 25 December 1840 "48 years & 17 days", from his gravestone located in the front yard of the A. Basie Vanlandingham home in Columbia, Missouri. He died intestate, no will.
 Merit was not mentioned in his mother's will but he signed as a witness to her signature on the codicial.
 Merit was on the roster of the War of 1812. He was with 4th. Reg't (Mountjoy's) Mounted, Kentucky Volunteers. He probably received a land grant for his war service. By 1823 he had moved his family to Missouri. He owned a farm on Perche Creek of 368 acres, SN, T48 & 49, R13, near Columbia, Missouri. Merit is listed in census records of Boone County, Missouri for 1830 and 1840 and his widow and children are listed in the 1850 and 1860 census records for Boone County.

Females: 1 age 20 under 30 Meret's listing in 1840 Boone Co. census, page 82: Males : 1-U/5, 2-5/10, 2-10/15, 1-30/40, 1-40/50 Females: 1-30/40 Merit's widow and children are listed in 1850 Boone County census on page 415. William Vanlandingham, age 75, was a member of the family:

  The William Vanlandingham, age 75 (b. 1775 in Virginia), probably was a son of Henry P. and Elizabeth Vanlandingham. Henry P. was a son of George and Miss Brown Vanlandingham. George, born in 1718, was a son of Francis (1666-1740), and Francis was a son of Michael (d. 1676) and his wife Elizabeth.
 Merit's widow, Elizabeth, was listed in 1860 census of Boone County, p. 879:
