a. Note:   James Vanlandingham Jr. served in the War of 1812 and apparently received a land grant for his service. From the Reporter Quarterly, Vol. 5, No. 2, Genealogical Society of Central Missouri, Columbia, Index of Original Land Patents of Twp. 48, Range 13, Boone Co., Missouri, James Vanlandingham, G4, patented 80 acres on 7 February 1826 in Sec. 20. James' brothers Thomas and Merit also patented 80 acres each in the same area in 1826.
  James Vanlandingham was listed in census records as follows:
  1820 Bourbon co., Kentucky: Males - 1 age under 10, 1 age 19-25. Females: 1 age 10-15, 1 age 20-30. James was married in 1818 when he was 24 years old. (Note: The female age 10 to 15 in his 1820 census was either an error or was not a child of James).
  1830 Boone Co., Missouri census, page 118: Males: 1-age 10/15, 1 age 30/40. Females: 2 kunder 5, 2 - 5/10, 1-30/40.
  1840 Boone Co., MO, census, page 085: Males: 1-15/20, 1-40/50 Females: 1-5/10, 2-10/15, 2-15/20, 1-40/50. In this census record James and Benjamin were on the same page on adjoining lines.

  James A. Vanlandingham Jr. died in Boone Co., Missouri 21 March 1863 and Elizabeth died 21 September 1859. Executors of James' will were Mathenias J. Vanlandingham and Edmund D. Hawkins. Inventory of the estate dated 27 March 1863 included cash, notes, personal property, 240 acres of land in Boone County, and 10 slaves. The estimated value of the slaves ranged from five hundred dollars for a 23 year old boy to one hundred fifty dollars for a four year old boy. One old "mama", blind, was estimated to have a value of three dollars. Estimated value of the estate was $5,361.30. The estate property was sold on 8 April 1863. Included among the buyers were Vanlandinghams, M. J., Jno., Eliz., Matilda, Amanda, Elizabeth, and Sarah.
 J. Vanlandingham is listed on page 885, line 31, HH 303/335 of the 1860 Boone Co., Missouri census. J. is shown to be age 66 and his property valuation is 6400./17,500. James' wife had died, his census lists only two daughters, Matilda, 29, and Amanda, 26. It appears the daughters had not married but remained in James' home to take care of their father after their mother died.In the 1850census, Boone Co., MO, pk 400 (797 old numbering), James Vanlandingham, 46, Elizabeth, 48, and children.
