a. Note:   On January 20, 1865 Merrit A. Vanlandingham and Willis H. Jacobs were securities for the appointment of Merrit's brother John H. Vanlandingham as administrator of the estate of their brother William M. Vanlandingham.
 The 1880 Texas Soundex lists M. A. Vanlandingham, 39, b. MO, in Medina County, with wife Melvina, 38, b. MO, and seven children. (Check census record).
 Melvina died in 1896 and Merrit married his second wife, Emily, prior to 1910. When the 1910 census was enumerated Merrit A. Vanlandingham lived in Caldwell Co., Texas. His wife, Emily, was the only other person in his household, no children listed.
 Lynn McCandless checked tombstones in the Caldwell County, Texas cemetery and found the grave of Merrit A. and his son Robert L. and others:
