Note: "JOE" was an All-City and All-State football player (end) while at the Jesuit University of Detroit High School in 1937. While in his teens, he took flying lessons and got his license to fly. He attended the University of Detroit, but left to enter the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was sent on a 9-week course at the Naval Academy. He married Betty in 1941 & they left Gesu Church under the uniformed & crossed swords of his fellow officers. He served in the Pacific as Lt. Commander & engi- neering officer of the U.S.S. Prairie. After the war, he graduated from U of D in Civil Engineering. Before his career could really get started, he had to spend a year in Herman Kiefer Hospital in Detroit because of TB. For many years, he had to make periodic visits to a hospital where they blew up his chest with air. He worked for his father-in-law and later took over the Cheboygan, MI, company, known as Durocher Dock & Dredge. The company has grown tremendously and now is headed by his son, Joe, Jr. Joe has also been State Highway Commissioner, Mayor of the City of Cheboygan, President & CEO of one of its two banks, & on the Hospital Board. He still loves to ski, play tennis & bridge.
