Note: Betty was raised in the North of Michigan, her father & mother being born in Detour, MI. After graduating from high school, she attended the University of Michigan. While a student there, she met Joe Van Antwerp of Detroit, fell in love, and they were married. She lived on Mendota Street in Detroit with her two children while Joe was serving in the Navy in WWII. After the war was over, Joe attended UD & graduated in civil engineering. Before he really could start his career, Joe caught tubercolosis and was hospitalized for a year in Detroit's Herman Kiefer Hospital. Betty again was left to raise the children alone. After Joe was released from the hospital, they moved to Betty's hometown of Cheboygan, where Joe got a job working for his father-in-law's company, Durocher Dock & Dredge. At the time they had one tug. Now it is a large firm. Betty is a woman of many skills and loves playing bridge. She is a dedicated Catholic and has worked on many church projects.
