Notes
a. Note:   Her Father was businessman in Jackson, MI. He graduated from Univ.of Michigan in law. Ran real estate & insurance business. At one time he was Chairman of the Prohibition Party in Jackson County.
"FRANCES" was first woman accepted at Michigan Normal Teachers College in Ypsilanti, MI, having won a scholarship in mathematics there. She did not attend because of her engagement to Gene.
She & her siblings lived on farm about six miles from downtown & they used to have to walk to St. Mary's elementary & high school there. Once, when she was about 17, she was given a ride by the late racing great Barney Oldfield.
Her brother Maurice introduced her to Gene VA & they dated. He got a job teaching at Gonzaga H.S. in Spokane, WA. She took the train out there and they were married in Odessa, WA. On their honeymoon, they borrowed a hand-propelled truck and went by rail. Gene & Frances had planned to homestead in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, but a neighbor sued because Gene had built on his property.
They moved to Detroit, Gene's hometown. 5 years after their marriage, Gene was a captain in the Michigan National Guard & they were called to the "front" in France. Frances was left during this time to raise three children by herself.
When the Great Depression hit in 1929, they struggled to raise the 9 of their 11 children.
Frances later became President of the Catholic Study Club and was on the Board of St. John's Hospital. She always was asked to "pour" tea at Gesu Church functions.
Later in life, she had a clot on the brain. It was successfully operated on, but she went three years with a depression in her skull until the piece of bone was placed back in.
She died, after having suffered a stroke, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital on East Grand Blvd.in Detroit.
