Notes
a. Note:   I, Daniel Janse Van Antwerp, Great-Grandson of JOHN BOURKE, have in my possession the original Record of Naturalization of the County Court, County of Rutland, Vermont, where, on April 15, 1845, he swore to the date & place of his birth and gave up allegiance to Great Britain.
JOHN BOURKE, on September 21, 1948, reappeared in court and swore in the document that he has been a resident of the United States at least 5 years and of the State of Vermont at least one year prior to the date of September 21, 1848. He also gave up allegiance to Victoria, Queen of Great Britain & Ireland and swore to the printed text that he "has behaved as a man of good moral character, attached to the principles of the Constitution of the United States, and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same."
He said that he was "born in the town of Bally Clough and County of Cork in that part of Great Britain called Ireland" in 1822. He said he was residing in CASTLETON in the County of Rutland, State of Vermont.
February 25, 1997 Troy, Michigan, U.S.A. I have a copy of his U.S. Army Discharge Papers. It shows that he served as a Private First Class in the Elias H. Broadwell Company, 1st Regiment of the Engineers & Mechanics of the Michigan Volunteers between September 25, 1861 and October 31, 1864, when he was discharged at Atlanta, Georgia, because of the expiration of his term of service. It shows also that he was born in Ireland, was 5' 6", dark complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, and had an occupation as a Shoemaker. It gives his age at Discharge as 38 (NOTE-This age differs from his Citizenship papers[above] since it would put his Birthyear at 1826 and not 1822, as on his Naturalization papers). The Discharge is signed by C.(C.) Howard, Capt., 18th, [ed: NYohns] C.M 20th [A.C.], Commanding the Reg't. DJVA
I have a copy of U.S. Dept.of the Interior, Bureau of Pensions Certificate No. 263718 dated January 22, 1890, indicating that MARY ANN BOURKE is the widow of JOHN BOURKE and is entitled to an $8 per month pension commencing October 29, 1879 & $12 after March 19, 1886. The handwriting is faint, but it appears to be signed by Secy.of the Interior John W. Gable. DJVA
I have a copy of an Oath of Identity which is stamped "Bounty $100 paid August 29, 1867...NY. DJVA
I have a copy of a Marshall Catholic Cemetery Certificate dated September 14, 1870. It shows that JOHN BOURKE of the City of Marshall, County of Calhoun, State of Michigan, paid $10 for burial LOT 156, BLOCK A for himself, heirs & assigns. Signed by Rev. D. Callaert, Pastor. DJVA
