Obituary: The Clinton Herald Monday August 4, 1941 p. 5 Funeral services will be held at 10:30 o'clock Tuesday morning in the First Presbyterian church for Mrs. Walter D. Morris, Jr., 803 Fifth avenue, South, who died at 4:15 p.m. Saturday in her home after a brief illness. A private prayer service will be held in the family home at 10 o'clock. The services will be in charge of Dr. Bruce McCullough, pastor, and Dr. H.J. Rendell, Morrison, Ill., former pastor of the church and an intimate friend of the family. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. The death of Mrs. Morris was a shock to a wide circle of friends who had come to know her intimately through her work in the First Presbyterian church of which she had been an active member many years and through her other activities. Bessie Van Allen was born June 23, 1883, in Chicago, daughter of John D. and Alice Holmes Van Allen. The family came to Clinton in 1892 when her father founded the department store which still bears the family name. She was educated in St. Mary's school, Knoxville, Ill., and was married Sept. 25, 1912, to Walter D. Morris, Jr. In addition to her deep interest in the First Presbyterian church, Mrs. Morris served on the board of lady managers of Jane Lamb hospital. She also was past president of Chapter FI, P.E.O. Sisterhood, and was a charter member of the Mardi club. Mrs. Morris' chief interests, however, were in the home and family. She is survived by her husband, Walter D. Morris, Jr., a daughter, Miss Mary Jane Morris, Clinton; a son, Walter D. Morris III, now of Watertown, S.D., and a brother, Frederick H. Van Allen, of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John D. Van Allen.
