Note: Illinois Death Index CONOVER ADA M F/W UNK 3450298 1925-06-02 KANE ELGIN 25-06-04 The following letter was sent July 11, 1955 to Mr and Mrs W.F. Powers from John D. Van Allen and Son, Inc. 200-5th Ave. So. Clinton, Iowa. "Dear Cousins: Was sorry not to have been on hand the other morning when you were in and talked to John Van Allen, regarding family geneology, so you could qualify as a Daughter of the Revolution. I believe John told you that his sister Jane, had just been going through the same thing so she would be better accepted in Frederick, Maryland, which I believe was where Barbara Fritchie wave the American Flag to taunt the oncoming Red Coats or somebody. Was so sorry to learn from John, that your Father (Nick) had passed away within the last year. You will all miss him greatly, I know. Although I never met your mother, she always remembered me at Christmas time, as did your Dad after she had left. Your Father was here once since I have been here, and that was years and years ago. We used to see the Magnussson's in Elgin, and have seen Mabel and Marcey on two or three occasions. Am sure you will be glad to learn that a salesman was in just a couple of days ago, accumulating geneological information of the Van Allens' for Family Hisotries of Prominent Poeple. The books are sold only to College Libraries, and to town libraries of over 40,000 in population. As soon as the gentleman sends back a rough draft of what he acquired here of the Van Allen History, we'll make a copy and forward it on to you. I spoke to him of your interest, and he said that when we finish with the History that whe was accumulating here, a copy of it would serve your purpose, though I also recall his saying that if this history did not go back far enough, you could always contact the Holland Society in New York. John was saying, that you were under the impression that Father (John D. Van Allen) was a Son of the American Revolution, but I never happened to hear him mention it, or did I ever see any written material along that line. Be assured that we will gladly do anything we can for you, and do hope that I will gladly do anything we can for your, and do hope that I will have the pleasure of meeting you at some time in the future, for the Van Allen Clan seems to be shrinking very fast. With all good wishes. Very sincerely yours, Walter D.
