Note: In the spring of 1775, he volunteered in West Chester County, New York, to combat the tories who were plundering Westchester and surrounding counties. No British troops were stationed above New York City until it was occupied by the enemy on September 5, 1776, having word that British Col. Holmes was coming to destroy his regiment, Chapman and forty five or fifty others volunteered to meet them. They were surrounded by four times their number of torry horsemen but formed a "hollow square" and at the point of bayonets and a great slaughter of men and horses, killed Col. Holmes' horse and wounded him. The enemy was repulsed by Chapman and his patriots without loss of any man. He was in the march south to meet Cornwallis in Virginia, and faught at Dobbs Ferry.
