Note: Henry was born in North Adams, Massachusetts and, on December 18, 1863, at the age of 18, he enrolled in Company C of the 4th Massachusetts Volunteer Cavalry to fight for the north in the Civil War.He saw duty in Virginia and South Carolina and was honorably discharged at Richmond, Virginia on November 14, 1865, six months after the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee. After his discharge from the cavalry, he returned to Massachusetts and on May 22, 1866, married a cousin, Eugenia Maria Whitman (b. November 6, 1845), and they had a daughter, Eva Bell, born January 2, 1867. Eva Bell died August 8, 1868, but the records do not indicate what happened to Eugenia. She may have died about 1868/69. Henry worked briefly in Nebraska and Wyoming before settling in Colorado in 1870 to mine gold and silver. He married Jennie A. Stanley on November 15, 1877, at Sunshine, Colorado, and she passed away on February 25, 1879 at Jamestown, Colorado. They had no children. On May 18, 1881, Henry married Mary A. (Hayes) Sibbitt, a widow, and they lived in Ward and Jamestown where he mined. About 1894, they established their home in Left Hand Canyon, above Boulder, which was the family home for about 40 years. Henry's discharge papers describe him as being 5 feet 11 inches in height and weighing between 140 to 150 pounds.He had a light complexion with blue eyes and brown hair. During his service in the Cavalry, he acquired a tatoo of an eagle on his hight arm and a star on his right hand. He was a member of the Nathional Lyon GAR Post 005 and was know as "Hank" among the miners in and around Boulder.
