Lieutenant Colonel Albert L. Bieber, 76, USAF Retired, formerly of Port Jefferson, died of heart disease March 14 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Martinez, California.
He was born on October 18, 1906, in New York City, and attended Columbia and Rutgers Universities. He was employed by the First National Bank of Port Jefferson and then by the Security National Bank, formed by the merger of First National and the Bank of Port Jefferson.
Colonel Bieber was a member of the 7th Regiment of the National Guard in New York City. During World War II, he served with the Army in Europe, where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, he returned to Port Jefferson. He returned to active duty in 1951 in the Air Force, and served in the United States, Germany, and Greenland before retiring in 1969 with his wife in Concord, California.
He is survived by his wife, the former Harriet G. Van Cott (1775 Live Oak Avenue, Concord, California 94521); his daughter, Carol Pence of Arlington; his son, Donald Bieber of Concord, California, and grandchildren Jason and Julia Pence.
While living in Port Jefferson, he was active in Wilson Ritch Post 432 of the American Legion, serving as Adjutant and Commander. He was selected for membership in the 40/8, an American Legion honor society.
A memorial service was held March 16 in Concord. Burial was in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
