After Hugh's death or desertion, Phebe worked hard and raised her children the best she could, perhaps with help from her father. Since Hugh was not around to pay the 500 Pounds, it is assumed that her father, as co-signer of the marriage bond, paid that sum to the state of NC to help take care of the children. (If Hugh was dead, no marriage bond would need to be paid. Does this mean that the second story of desertion instead of death is the one to be believed?)
She died at the home of her son Rev. Forrester McKaughn. Forrester and his wives (Sallie Parrish and Rebecca Perkins) are buried at A-I Cemetery in the same plot and marked.
