Note: Joseph F. Rathbun stricken Sunday; dies suddenly succumbs at home of C.A. Vanderhoof, Pine Street-Employed for years by c ity. Joseph F. Rathbun, 59 years old, who was born in Bennington township an d had lived in Owosso and vicinity practically all his life, died suddenl y late Sunday afternoon at the home of his father-in-law, C.A. Vanderhoof , 623 Pine street, where he was stricken with paralysis at about 2 o'clo ck, while seated at the table eating dinner. Mr. Rathbun's wife, who ha d intented ro visit the Vanderhoof home later in the day, and those of h is children who are in the city, were called and a physician was summoned . He did not recognize the members of his family and the doctor could d o nothing to relieve him. The stroke, affecting his entire right side, c aused death at 5 o'clock. It was not until he had left the table that Mr . Rathbin's condition was regarded as serious. The deceased was reared in Bennington where he resided until he had atta ined manhood. He went to Brant, Saginaw county, where he resided a few ye ars, then coming to Owosso. He was employed for years in the Ann Arbor sh ops here, but for the last few years had been working for the city in th e public works department. He possessed a rugged constitution, having bu t seldom been incapasitated by illness, and appeared to be in excellent h ealth up to the time he was stricken. Arriving early in the day at the Vanderhoof home he conversed in an amin ated manner, laughing and joking with members of the family. Usually a he arty eater, he said while at the dinner table that he did not have much a ppetite and a few moments later symptoms developed that alarmed the famil y. He sat down by the fire for a time and then was removed to a bed. Aris ing he groped his way to a sofa, where he lost concsciousness before th e arrival of his family and died peacefully. Surviving with the widow are four daughters, Mrs. Rena Weeks and Mrs. Ad a Frances, and Miss Louise Rathbun, who is attending school at Big Rapids , and three sons, Leo and Cyrus Rathbun of Owosso, and Clarnence, who i s working in Toledo. There also are nine grandchildren. Two daughters pre ceded the father in death. He also leaves his mother, Mrs. Abigail Nelson, of Laingsburg, and our s ister, Mrs. Clara Stanger, of Terra Haute, ind., and a half brother, Stil lman Nelson, of Florida. Mr. Rathbun was married to Sarah Vanderhoof May 2, 1878, and began thei r married career in the same house in which he was born. The body was removed Sunday afternoon to the home of Mr. Rathbun, 315 So uth Gould street, where the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon a t 2 o'clock, Rev. Hartley Cansfield officiating. Internment will be mad e in Oak Hill cemetery. Speaking of Mr. Rathbun's work, this morning, Commissioner of Public Imp rovements Fred Hanscom said that the deceased was one of the most faithfu l employees of the public works department.
