Note: HISTORY OF MACON Co, MISSOURI, Sesquicentinnial Edition, Macon County Hist orical Society 1987, Submitted by Adra House Coghlan Mt. Pleasant, Iow a: BENJAMIN HARRISON Benjamin Harrison was born in Jones Co, North Carolina. He came to Mac on County about 1856 with his parents, William and Mary (McDaniel) Harris on (1813-1880). William's parents were John and Elizabeth Harrison (1778- 1866). There were both William and John Harrison's listed in the unoffici al 1784-1787 census for Jones County and these names are also found in t he official 1790 national census. Benjamin Harrison son of William and Mary, attended the school nearest the ir home. He married Adra Hutchinson on February 17, 1878, in Macon Count y. She was born 17 April, 1861, near LaPlata, daughter of Lewis and Parth ena Daugherty) Hutchinson. She came from presbyterian families but join ed the Methodist Church shortly after her marriage. However, in the 1880 's she and her husband Ben, transferred their membership to the Bear Cre ek Presbyterian Church. They were the parents of 10 children. They were: John (1879-stillborn ); Stella (1881-1968) married Ed Moncrief; Ira (1883-1972 married Julia B urnham; Aura (1885-1966) married Teresa Louderback; Walter (1886-1955) m arried Nellie Hamilton; Pearl (1888-still living) married Eula Fulmer; Ot is (1890-1972) married Lora Lyda; Zelma (1893-1982) married Charles Hous e; Loma (1896-1972) married Aura Hungate; and Omer (1899-1983) married Eu la Borron. Benjamin and Adra Harrison were hardworking and thrifty people. Their eff orts covered farming, including the usual crops of hay, grain, brick-makin g, and a sorghum mill. They maintained large gardens and fruit trees, a nd many quarts and half-gallons of fruits and vegetables were preserved f or the family's use. Ben was generous with his hospitality, was a stro ng leader among his own brothers and sisters and their children. The fami ly held a Harrison Reunion every year and this reunion is still held ea ch August near Edina where Don Harrison (a grandson) his mother, Eula, wid ow of Omer Harrison, live. Ben often invited passers-by to 'stop in for the meal', and it happened of ten that visitors and relatives alike 'stayed over'. All the children hel ped with the farm work, particularly the brick-making. The clay for the b rick-making was taken from the banks of the creek on the farm. Forms h ad to be made, the fires had to be kept going day and night for the baki ng of the bricks, and a sudden rainstorm created a big problem. Straw w as used in the brick-making process and this also was grown on the far m. Everyone helped with the cane. It had to be stripped in the field, cu t, and hauled to the mill located on the farm. This mill, wheel-powere d, processed the cane, and turned out large vats of sorghum. Ben not only made molasses for his own family but for the other farme rs in the community. The mother and daughters kept the gardens, process ed the fruits and vegetables, sewed their clothing, made quilts, and wo ve rag rugs on the very large loom. Ben Harrison was much respected by his family, neighbors, and friends - a nd much loved by his grandchildren. Adra Harrison was a 'jewel' to her ch ildren and their families. Every one of them marveled at her streng th of character, her kindness, patience, and her influence on her famil y, - and her grandchildren. The home burned in later years - leaving only memories for these childr en and grandchildren - but they are strong memories of family ties - hap py times - and a great sense of belonging to a family that had the coura ge to make a decision and carry it through in order to make a better li fe for themselves.
