Surety: 0 ========================== General research; Samuel LUCKETT, parentage unknown, arrived in Maryla nd sometime before 1678. While it is assumed that he was an immigrant he d id not take up any land grant nor did anyone else receive land for transpo rting him. It is possible that he was related to one of the several Lucket ts who immigrated to 17th century Virginia, but no evidence has been fou nd of such a relationship.
The first record we have found for him is in 1678, he was paid 830 lb s. of tobacco for his service in the Nanticoke Indian war in the Provin ce of Maryland. It is concluded he was young and not more than thirty yea rs of age at the time.
Samuel LUCKETT is married before 1684 to Elizabeth HUSSEY, the daught er of Thomas and Joanna (PORTER) HUSSEY. She was the widow of John GARDINE R. Some believe that Samuel had more than one wife named Elizabeth and th at his first three children were by another Elizabeth, which accordi ng to Thomas HUSSEY's will can not be true. In March 1684 he witnessed t he will of his neighbor, Col. William CHANDLER. On 12 August 1684 Willi am SMOOT of Charles Co, Maryland, planter sold to Samuel LUCKETT of Charl es Co, Maryland, planter for 5,000 lbs. tobacco, 150 acres next to 'Johnsons Royke', adjoining land of Geo. G OODRICK, it apparently came to be known as 'Smoots Chance'. It was witness ed by Wm. THEOBALD & Jno. RICHARDS. At Purgative Court in Charles Co, 16 84 appeared Samuel LUCKETT of Charles Co, who intermarried with the reli ct and administrator of John GARDINER and showed that he never intermeddl ed with goods. 8 Sep. 1686 Samuel LUCKETT of Charles Co, Maryland intermar ried with Elizabeth, Admix. of John GARDINER dec'd., also came Richard a nd Luke GARDINER of St. Mary's all offered to be legally charged with estate & debts. She w as the young childless widow of John GARDINER a scion of an early promine nt Roman Catholic family.
William LANGWORTH, son of James & Agatha (JOHNSON) LANGWORTH married A nn HUSSEY daughter of Thomas HUSSEY. In his will 7 Feb. 1693_1 May 1694, S t. Mary's Co, Maryland, he names among others 'brother Samuel LUCKETT'S th ree sons'. In January 1695 he was bondsman for Major James SMALLWOOD w ho married Mary the relict of Robert THOMPSON Jr. In Nov. & Dec. of 169 6, Samll LUCKETT signed as a grand juror. He was a member of the Provinci al Court during 1696, and in that year signed a petition to the Ki ng as a civil officer of Charles County. This fact established him as a me mber of the Church of England.
On 26 March 1697 a shallop about 12 or 14 hhnds. was built in Charles C o, MD for Mr. Saml. LUCKETT. Samuel LUCKETT & John SAUNDERS were sureti es on the estate of Edward SAUNDERS in May 1699 Charles Co, MD, with his w ife Jane being the administer.
In 1700 Thomas HUSSEY died in Charles Co, Maryland giving in his wi ll to his grandson Thomas Hussey LUCKETT, 1310 acres in Chiugamuxon, daugh ter Elizabeth LUCKETT was executrix and residuary legatee of his estate.
On 3 July 1703, he and Col. Wm. DENT offered bond for Charity COURTS a nd John CONTEE, the exers. of the estate of James KEECH, late of St. Mary 's County.
5 Mar 1705 Samuel wrote his will and died by 18 Jul 1705, when it was p robated in Charles Co, MD. He left to his wife 150 acres 'Smootes Chanc e' at Port Tobacco. To his eldest son Samuel 200 acres 'Hussey's Discover y' also 150 acres. To son Thomas 500 acres in Virginia near Quanticot t. To son Ignatius 100 acres 'Thompson's Square'. To young son Thomas Huss ey LUCKETT personalty. Residue & money due in England to wife & childre n. Exers. Wife & son Samuel. Wit. Philip BRISCOE Sr, Jos. VENOM & Michae ll WATERER. From the time of his will it is concluded that all of his so ns were minors except perhaps his eldest, Samuel.
Samuel LUCKETT'S inventory of his personal estate was taken between 2 A pril 1705 & 23 August 1705, by Capt. Philip BRISCOE & Michael MARTEN in Ch arles Co, MD for a total of 829.13.03 pounds. There were things at Zach ia Quarter, the old house which was undoubtedly the smaller and less prete ntious home first built and it may have been a primitive log cabin which t he settlers usually built upon arrival, the house in which they lived cons isted of a hall, Mrs. LUCKETTS Room, little room adjoining, room chambe r, hall chamber, new room chamber, new room, a milk house, salt house, kit chen, & there was the ordinary & stable. There was listed a mulatto, 6 neg roes, 7 servants, 97 cattle, 71 hogs, 17 horses, tobacco worth 70 lbs., ma terial, chairs, pistols & guns among other things. He also had an invento ry of goods out of England 1154711 tobacco. Also a crop of tobacco on t he Plantations 2511811. He was the administrator of the estate of Willi am EARLE, of Charles Co, but after his death Philip HARROLD instituted act ion against the estate of Earle and obtained judgment. Elizabeth LUCKE TT in court swore that her deceased husband fully administered on the esta te of EARLE and knew of no effects in her hands belonging to the estate a nd requested time to the court of 13 Nov. next to better inform herse lf in the matter.
