  HICKORY - Lois Fern Van Dran Bigsby, 100, of Hickory, passed away Monday, June 9, 2008, at Lutheran Home Hickory-East. Born Feb. 15, 1908, in Iowa, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Blanche Shenkle Van Dran. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she helped organize the Goforth Club and volunteers for the church day care. She and her husband were former owners of Bigsby's Delicatessen. She was a member of the Hickory Altrusa Club and was a former president of the club and a woman of the year of the club. Mrs. Bigsby was a judge and registrar of the Republican Party. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Bigsby Sr.; a son, Paul Bigsby Jr.; and three grandchildren, Vernon, Paula and Betsy Bigsby. She is survived by a daughter, Darlene Bigsby Wentz of Hickory; a grandson, Don Murphy of Conway, S.C.; two granddaughters, Sharon Breunig of Georgia and Patti Bigsby of North Carolina; 10 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, June 11, 2008, in the chapel at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Earlynne Bartley officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, prior to the service, in the chapel at the church. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 311 Third Ave., NE, Hickory, N.C. 28601. Bass-Smith Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family of Lois Fern Van Dran Bigsby.
