Notes
a. Note:   b. in Union County Ohio 21 Oct. 1910. Married Hannah I. Salisbury, 13 July 1930. Hannah died 9 Feb. 1968. She was the daughter of Walter E. and Jesse (Griffith) Salisbury of Vaughsville, Ohio.
Virgil lived in Union County his first six years, then moved to Putnam County where he attended Rimer and Vaughsville schools. Growing up he helped on the farm, being adept at thinning sugar beets (left handed), and feeding out pigs.
After school he went to work in Toledo and later Detroit. In 1935 he and his wife Hannah returned to the farm he had grown up on, to begin his life long profession, farming.. He specialized in raising pigs (as his grandfather James had). Their spare time was spent with the young people in the community and several winters in Florida. Virgil also worked for the State Highway Department and Rohrbaugh Excavating.
They moved to their own farm in 1959, (a mile east of where he was raised) where he still resides, among many friends. And if you talked to any of his friends I'm sure they would recall a bit of mischief he has surprised them with. Not long ago a friend passed around the new "retirement watch" he had just received, for everyone to see. As it passed Virgil, he slipped the new one on and passed his own Timex on around. When it got back to his friend he didn't think that was the watch his company had given him. He even ran out to his car to get the box to double check! Virgil has been a member of Kalida Masonic Lodge and many other organizations for many years. My family can remember many wonderful times at Virgil and Hannah's Virg gave our kids their first pig to raise. I also was a victim of some of Virg's mischievous acts, as a new member in the family I learned not to play cards with him.
