Obituary of Monday, April 19, 1937 in the Kalamazoo Gazette page 9:3 TWO PERSONS END LIVES IN COUNTY DURING WEEK-END Maude VanDyke, 77 Dies in Gas-Filled Kitchen; Man drowns in River. Two deaths apparently suicides were investigated Sunday by police and sherriff's department and Dr. Ralph G. Cook, county coroner. Mrs. Maude VanDyke, 77, of 2203 Superior avenue, was found dead in the kitchen of her home with all the jets of a gas range turned on, when her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Diettra, 2137 Superior avenue, broke in the back door of the home at 10:15 Sunday morning. HER HEALTH POOR A white Spitz dog, a pet of Mrs. VanDyke, was lying on the floor in the living room, nearly dead from the effects of the gas. Dr. Cook stated Mrs. VanDyke had been dead for several hours. Mrs. VanDyke was a widow and had been in ill health. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Diettra and Mrs. Sarah Morrison, Waverly avenue, Detroit, and two sons, Peter VanDyke, 1123 Lane boulevard, and Abraham VanDyke, 703 Parker avenue, Kalamazoo; a sister, Mrs. Lena DeLeeuw, Kalamazoo; a brother, John Appel, of the Netherlands; and nine grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
