Fraser FIRST FEMALE AIR PASSENGER PASSES AT 82 The world�s first woman to fly in an aeroplane on a memorable day in the summer of 1909 at Baddeck is dead at the age of 82. Mrs. Dolena (Dolly) Florence MacLeod of Sydney River died Wednesday at Victoria General Hospital, Halifax. Like all Cape Bretoners 60 years ago Mrs. MacLeod as a young mother was thrilled by the history making flight of the Silver Dart over Baddeck Bay. But on a sunny day in July of 1909 she wrote her own name in the history of flight when she accepted Casey Baldwin�s invitation to go for a spin over the Baddeck meadowlands to become the first woman of flight. Mrs. MacLeod was born at Whycocomagh daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William MacKay. Her husband, James A. MacLeod and one son, Albert, predeceased her. Surviving are four daughters: Isobel (Mrs. Evan Hull) North Sydney; Jean (Mrs. Fred Williams) Sydney Mines; Kathryn (Mrs. Barrie Munroe) Dartmouth; Mabel (Mrs Pringle Fraser) Elderbank, N.S.; and one son, Rev. Alex H. MacLeod, Brooks, Alberta. Three sisters also survive, they are Mrs. Hannah MacKinnon and Miss Katie MacKay, Cornwall, Ont.; Mrs. Mabel Wells, Victoria, B.C. Also surviving is one brother John MacKay, Wayne, Mich. The remains will be forwarded to Sydney today and will rest at the R. H. Fillmore Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at the United Protestant Church, Sydney River, Friday at 2 p.m. Interment will be in North Sydney.
