a. Note:   Mary Boyd MacDonald 94, Truro Mary Boyd MacDonald, 94, formerly of Sydney, quietly passed away in Truro on Tuesday, April 9, 2002. Born in Glace Bay on Sept. 9, 1907, she was the eldest daughter of the late George and Jesse (Smith) MacLeod. She received her early education in Glace Bay and Sydney. Mary graduated from Acadia University in 1928 with a bachelor of arts degree and a teachers diploma. Her married life was in New York City. Upon the death of her husband, Donald, she returned to Sydney in 1949 where she taught in schools of Sydney. Her teaching career spanned 26 years. A well-known resident of Sydney, she was active in IODE, First United Church, Sydney Historical Society, Meals on Wheels, Laubach Literacy Council (Each One Teach One) and a founding member of University Women's Club. She drew joy from visits with her family, her students and many friends, especially her reading club and her bridge group. Mary was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was predeceased by her husband, Donald, her brothers, Bert (Margaret) MacLeod, Donald (Isabel) MacLeod, sister, Ralphie (Charlie) Smith. She is survived by her children, Gordon (Donna), Truro, and Heather (Robert) Weld, Maders Cove, N.S.; as well as grandchildren, Erin and Heather MacDonald, Truro, Donald (Andrea) Weld, Rye, N.Y., Alexandra (Ben) Weld Davis, Halifax, and Richard Weld, Toronto. There are four great-grandchildren, Katie and Lucy Weld and Noah and Charlotte Davis. She was loved by and will be missed by many nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 15 at First United Church in Sydney, with reception to immediately follow in the church. Interment will take place that afternoon at St. James Church Cemetery in Little Bras d'Or, Boularderie, with a family service. Family flowers only. Donations in her name would be appreciated to the James McConnell Memorial Library in Sydney of the Cape Breton Regional Library system.
