a. Note:   Her parents, Frank and Sarah Denney, were first cousins. According to Stephen Lee Denney's research and other sources, Francis C. "Frank" Denney was born on December 13, 1836 to Wiley and Clara Enoch Denney. Sarah, daughter of Charles and Martha Everett Denney, was born in 1843. They were married December 24, 1860. Frank and Sarah operated a tobacco farm on Dry Branch and began a large family. Although the family never discussed it much in our tradition, we know that Frank was murdered by Dutch Oldham on the first day of September 1881 and was buried at the Denney Cemetery on Denney Branch. After his death, Sarah and the children faced hard times for a number of years. She survived until March 14, 1928. Family tradition, coming from Frances Louise Granstaff Winfree, says that the murder took place at a county fair. The motive is unknown. More research on this subject is still needed.
